WESLEYAN WOMEN'S CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM QUALIFIES FOR NCAA MEET
(Senior Wes Fuhrman Makes National Field as an Individual for the Men)

With senior Courtney Quirin leading Wesleyan to the finish line as she has in all six events in which she has competed this year, Wesleyan earned its second berth in the NCAA Division III Championships in the last three years by placing fifth of 41 teams at the New England Division III Championship in Cumberland, Me. The 2002 squad, with Quirin aboard, also earned a spot in the national meet.
Quirin placed seventh of 281 runners while sophomore Ellen Davis placed 10th. Both earned all-New England honors along with senior Liz Colville with her 34th-place showing.  The top 35 runners in the race are deemed all-New England.  Rounding out Wesleyan's scoring five were junior Erin Smith in 40th place and senior Megan Wise in 72nd place.
Quirin will be making her fourth straight trip to the NCAAs as she qualified as an individual in both 2001 and 2003, and earned All-American honors in 2001.
On the men's side, senior Wes Fuhrman was a solid fourth of 280 competitors to take one of the seven spots reserved for individuals who are not part of qualifiying teams for the NCAA Championship. The men's team finished fifth as well, but only four men's teams from New England make the national field as opposed to five for the women. Junior Owen Kiely just missed a spot at nationals by two places as he was the ninth individual finisher not on a top-four team with his 19th-place finish overall. He still received all-New England honors along with Fuhrman.  Fuhrman will be competing in the NCAAs for the first time.
The NCAA Division III Championship is slated for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday, Nov. 20.
