Camp Emphasis

The Cardinal Swimming Camp is designed for individual and group instruction in the fundamentals of each of the four competitive swimming strokes.  Focus will be on stroke mechanics, starts, turns, and race strategies.   The camp will also introduce basic information on flexibility, nutrition and strength training.  Each camper will be videotaped with individual feedback on each of the four strokes.

   Sessions are open to all participants aged 8 – 18.  The cost of the camp is $360 

The Camp Includes:

  • Instruction: 4 competitive strokes

  • Instruction: starts & turns

  • Video Analysis

  • Written Stroke Evaluation

  • Camp T-shirt

   The full fee must accompany the registration form.  Registration deadline is May 1, or once the camp fills.

Daily Schedule 

8:30 – 10:30 Pool session

            Workout and stroke mechanics

10:30 – 11:00 Out of pool instruction

11:00 – 12:15 Lunch and rest*

12:15 – 2:30 Pool session

            Video and stroke mechanics

2:30 – 3:00   Daily wrap up activity 

*Note: Campers must provide their own lunch in a non-insulated back and labeld with their name.  Drinks will be provided.

Facility

Wesleyan University has one of the finest aquatic centers in the country.  The Cardinal Swimming Camp will utilize Wesleyan’s 8 lane 50 meter by 20-lane 25 yard pool.

Equipment Needed 

   Each camper will need to provide: goggles, kickboard, suits, towels, and sneakers. 

Insurance 

   Wesleyan University does not provide medical insurance for campers.  In the event of illness or injury requiring treatment, family medical insurance must be used. Each camper must have health insurance in order to attend camp.

Camp Director & Coaching Staff 

Mary Bolich

Mary Bolich begins her sixth season as the men's & women's swimming coach, as well as aquatics director, at Wesleyan in 2005-06. Prior to coming to Wesleyan, Mary was the head women's swimming coach at the University of Iowa for four years (1996-2000). During her tenure in Iowa City, Mary moved the Hawkeyes from a top-100 team to a top-30 program in three years. The following are a few of the team's accomplishments from 1996-99: four 2000 Olympic Trial qualifiers, three NCAA qualifiers, two All-Americans, one Big Ten champion, 20 team records, and the 2000 University of Iowa Athlete of the Year. Academically Mary's teams produced three academic All-Americans, 37 academic All-Big Ten honors, and the 2000 University of Iowa Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The team consistently was among the top three teams on campus with the highest GPA. In 1998 the swimming team had the highest GPA in the athletic department.
     Before coaching at Iowa, Mary spent seven years at Penn State as an assistant women's swimming coach. Also Mary was an instructor in PSU's department of Exercise & Sport Science. Mary came to PSU from the University of California at Berkeley where she was a women's assistant during 1988-89. Cal finished fifth as a team at the NCAA Div. I Championships that year. From 1986-88, Mary was the assistant women's swimming coach at the U. of Pittsburgh. The 1987 and 1988 teams won the Big East Championships. While at Pitt, she served as the administrative assistant for the Director of the External Studies Program. Mary received her B.S. from Temple U. in 1984 and completed her master's degree in sports administration there in 1986.
     During her first season at Wesleyan, both of Mary's teams achieved national recognition for academics during both the fall and spring semester with her women's troops ranking first among all NCAA colleges for spring, 2001 GPA and her men ranking fourth for the same marking period. Her teams continue to rank among the top 20 nationally each semester.  The past fiive summers, Mary has directed the Cardinal Swim Camp at Wesleyan for school-aged boys and girls

Mollie Parrish:

 Mollie joined the Wesleyan staff for her first year in 2002-03 and enters her fourth season as Mary's assistant.
    A 2002 graduate of Denison University with a degree in biology, Mollie became one of the college's most improved swimmers, specializing in the fly and free. During her four years, she earned 20 All-America honors, won seven national titles and set three NCAA Division III records. In 2001, she helped the Big Red win their first NCAA crown, upsetting perennial favorite Kenyon. That year, Mollie was honored as NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year. She also was a Verizon/CoSIDA second-team academic All-American and was an alternate for an NCAA post-graduate scholarship as a senior. In addition to her swimming activity, 
    Along with her coaching duties at Wesleyan, Mollie serves as an assistant facility director in the athletic department.

Kristen Noone

In her sixth season as the Head Coach of the Trinity College Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams. Prior to taking over as the head coach, she served as an assistant at Trinity. Noone brings a wealth of coaching and competitive swimming experience to the Trinity program. She was an assistant coach for the Manchester Swim Club and for the Massachusetts Special Olympics team. Noone was also a coach in residence at the Total Performance Swimming Camp and Elite Sprint Camp at Kenyon College, working with some of the nation’s top NCAA Division I and Olympic coaches. For the past several years, she has coached age group swimmers at the Cardinal Swim Camp.Noone competed as a distance freestyler and backstroker at Boston College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She was a four-year letterwinner and captain in her senior year. She was a Big East Conference and New England Championships qualifier all four years and earned all-conference and all-academic honors during her collegiate career.

 

There will be other coaches added to the staff as we get closer to the camp date.
