Led by team co-captains Lisa Drennan '09 (#7, main photo by Bill Burkhart) and Ellie Healy '10 (#10, photo insert lower left), the Cardinals have good reason to expect outstanding results when the 2008 season unfolds. Drennan, one of the most decorated Wesleyan players in history, is a two-time all-NESCAC and all-New England performer who also received honorable-mention AVCA All-America laurels in 2007 after finding herself as the NESCAC Player of the Year in 2006. She has ranked among the top-five nationally in kills per game the last two seasons. Healy was a second-team all-NESCAC choice from her setter spot in 2007, averaging 11.42 assists per game. Wesleyan also returns starting middle hitter Ashley Farrow '10 as well as the talented starting libero Ruby Hernandez '11. Anna Williams '09 is back as a defensive specialist, having played in every game during the 2007 campaign. In total, the Cardinals have 10 returning letterwinners and eight additional newcomers to fashion a squad that will challenge for NESCAC supremacy. Last year's squad was 17-8 overall and 6-4 in NESCAC play. The 2006 squad was 19-9 and 7-3 in the conference. The Cardinals inaugurate the 2008 season by hosting the NESCAC/NEWMAC challenge Fri. and Sat, Sept. 5-6. Wesleyan opens Friday against NESCAC rival Williams, a perennial regional power which captured the NESCAC tournament title last season, before facing NEWMAC powers Coast Guard and Wellesley on Saturday.
