Alissa Santucci '12 Provides the Spark as Cards Rally Past Bates for Sweep of NESCAC Weekend
Alissa Santucci '12 (#17, photo) led Wesleyan with 13 kills as the Cardinals rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take an thrilling 3-2 decision over Bates Sat., Oct. 3 to complete a sweep of the home NESCAC weekend. The night before, the Cardinals bested Colby in three sets. After an 0-6 start, Wesleyan has won six matches in a span of eight outings and has evened its NESCAC mark at 2-2.
Santucci hit at a .275 clip vs. Bates and a .344 rate over the weekend as she amassed 23 kills, 23 digs, three aces, two blocks and four assists. After falling behind 15-1 in the opening set against the Bobcats and eventually dropping the set 25-13, Wesleyan came back to grab the second set, 25-20. Bates recovered for a third-set win, 25-16, but the Cardinals regained their composure and never trailed in the fourth set en route to a 25-23 win. In the fifth and deciding set, Wesleyan fell behind early but broke away from a 4-4 tie to take the lead for good, capturing the match with a 15-12 triumph.
Setter Ellie Healy '10 tossed up 40 assists while Ashley Farrow '10 and Casey Reed '12 combined for another 21 kills. Libero Ruby Hernandez '11 came through with some stellar defense in compiling 21 digs.
On Wed., Oct. 7, the squad headed to Coast Guard for a tough non-conference affair. The match came right down to the wire as the Cadets prevailed, 3-1. Wesleyan took the opening set, 25-23, before falling 25-20 in the second. Coast Guard hung on to win the third set, 25-23. Wesleyan had a chance to force a fifth set as the Cardinals forged a 24-20 lead in the fourth set but a 6-0 Cadet run closed out the match with the 26-24 win. Wesleyan had a great blocking and serving effort as Laura Volgenau '13 had six blocks while Reed had five with both Farrow and Healy contributing four. The team had 12 aces led by Hernandez with six. She also had 21 digs to pace the team in that area. Farrow had a team-leading 13 kills and Healy had her usual strong effort with 35 assists. Santucci had 10 kills and 13 digs.
The Cardinals have a key NESCAC weekend ahead at Conn. College where they will face Williams Fri., Oct. 9, followed by matches with Hamilton and Middlebury on Sat., Oct. 10.
