Behind a Combined 35 Points from Ali Fourney '09 and Lucy Sprung '08, Cards Cruise Past RIC, 80-37
Opening the season at home Tues., Nov. 18 against Rhode Island College, the Cardinals remained undefeated (11-0) vs. the Anchorwomen all-time with a resounding 80-37 victory. Jumping out to a 12-1 lead five minutes into the contest, Wesleyan pushed the margin to 36-12 late in the first period en route to a 43-14 lead at intermission. Ali Fourney '09 (#11, photo insert lower left) picked up 11 of her game-high 18 points in the first half while Lucy Sprung '08 (#34, main photo) posted 10 of her 17 in the opening 20 minutes. The lead never fell below 24 points in the second half as the Cardinals used a 15-0 run over a six-minute span to turn a 49-25 lead into a commanding 64-25 advantage. The team shot a brisk 45.3 percent from the field in the contest while five different players connected from behind the arc, accounting for a 5-for-11 effort by the squad. The team heads to Swarthmore Sat., Nov. 22 to take on the host in the opening round of the Swarthmore Tournament. The championship and consolation games are slated for Sun., Nov. 23. The other first-round game features Alvernia vs. Mary Washington.
