Cards Have Strong Showing for Two Straight Weeks, Defeating Three Crews Ranked Ahead of Them

Competing against Smith, WPI and Colby in Worcester, Mass. Sat., April 5, Wesleyan, ranked 16th in New England at the varsity eight level, cruised past both Colby, ranked eighth, and WPI, rated 15th, by margins of six and 14 seconds while placing just four seconds behind Smith, ranked sixth. Complementing the strong showing of the varsity eight was the novice eight which won its race with Smith 7.5 second off the pace and Conn. College 12 seconds behind. A second Smith entry trailed the field. The team's next action took place in Malden, Mass. Sat., April 12 when Bates, Tufts and New Hampshire were the opponents. In two separate dual races, Wesleyan lost to Bates, ranked fifth in New England, by 22 seconds but came back to knock off Tufts with a 1.7-second gap. Wesleyan, which had moved up to 10th regionally, upset the sixth-rated Jumbos. The Cards were in Pittsfield, Mass., Sat., April 19 for the Little Three regatta vs. Amherst and Williams. Williams measured Wesleyan by a 22-second margin in the varsity eight race while Wesleyan bested Vermont by 4.5 seconds. The Cardinals trailed Williams and Amherst in a varsity four event. The squad completed its dual-race schedule in Worcester, Mass. Sat. April 26 vs. Trinity, Conn. College, Bowdoin and Clark. Wesleyan was second to Trinity in the varsity eight by 12 seconds while finishing ahead of Vermont and Clark. Six colleges had entries in the varsity four event and Wesleyan was fifth among them, 29 seconds off the winning pace of Conn. College. The final action for the squad this spring came at the annual New England Regatta Sat.-Sun., May 3-4 in Worcester, Mass. In the varsity eight race, Wesleyan finished eighth of 13 squads while the results of the women's second varsity four, in which the Cardinals have an entry, will be identified on Sunday.
