Cards Post Most Impressive Win of the Season So Far with 4-2 Conquering of Div. I Sacred Heart

Adrienne Shea '08 (#2, main photo) receives hearty congratulations from her teammates after scoring the Cardinals' third goal of the game vs. Div. I Sacred Heart Tues., Jan. 22 in Middletown. It proved to be the game-winner as Wesleyan went on to capture a 4-2 victory, its first over the Pioneers in the last four meetings. Emily Avener '09 (#10, photo insert upper left) tied the game in the first period with her unassisted tally before Heather Lindgren '11 (#19, photo insert lower right) put the Cardinals ahead for good at 3:42 of the second stanza. Shea's goal at 10:28 ended the second period scoring. The first goal of Julia Heffelfinger's '11 career at 12:11 of the final stanza gave Wesleyan a 4-1 cushion before Sacred Heart ended the scoring at 15:24. Goaltender Rachel Stemerman '09 came through with a 26-save effort to backstop the defensive effort. The squad closed out the week with an exhibition game against Nichols, a team slated to turn varsity for the 2008-09 season. Wesleyan prevailed, 3-1, with Jessica Fischer '08, Sena Ito '11 and Avener lighting the lamp while Alix Strasnick '10 got the nod in the net and posted 18 saves. The Cards return to varsity action with a NESCAC weekend on the road, facing Conn. College Fri., Feb. 1 and Amherst Sat., Feb. 2.
