Hat Tricks from Meredith Smith '17 & Julia Black '16 Power Cardinals Past Wheaton, 8-7

Julia Black '18 broke a 6-6 deadlock with 13:46 remaining in the second half, then added an insurance marker 3:15 later which proved to be the difference in the game as the Cardinals went on to their 14th straight victory vs. Wheaton with an 8-7 win Wed., March 4. Up next for the squad is the home opener as the squad hosts Bates Sat., March 7 in a game slated for a webcast. With Meredith Smith '17 (#29, photo) netting her hat trick in a span of less than 13 minutes during the first half, Wesleyan jumped out to a 5-1 lead before Wheaton trimmed the margin to 5-3 at halftime. A goal by Leah Sherman '15, her second of the game, to open the second half put Wesleyan's lead at three goals, but a 3-0 Lyon run knotted the score at 6-6 with 19:07 on the clock. Black, who also had an assist in the contest, then put the Cardinals ahead for good off a pass from Finley Kincaid '18 before padding the lead and finishing off her hat trick after receiving a pass from Morgan Moubayed '17.
