Three Sophomores Earn All-New England Honors for Wesleyan as Team Finishes 9th of 15

Finishing ninth of 15 squads at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) tournament hosted by Southern Maine Feb. 23-24, the Cardinals had three sophomores come through with all-New England laurels. At 125 pounds, Dan Bloom '10 (photo insert lower left) secured a 3-2 mark to place fourth while the 2-2 record of Greg Hurd '10 (main photo) at 174 pounds was good enough for fourth place as well. Hurd led the team in winning percentage during the regular season with an overall mark of 18-7. Josh Berkovic '10 (photo insert upper right) grabbed sixth place at 165 pounds with a 2-3 mark. This event concluded the season for the grapplers who posted an 8-8 record in dual matches this year. Both Bloom and Hurd went on to earn NCAA Division III scholar All-America honors as each won at least two-thirds of their matches this season and/or placed in the NEWA Championship while maintaining at least a 3.2 GPA. As a team Wesleyan ranked third of the 15 teams in the NEWA for overall GPA and 20th in the country among Division III colleges. Another seasonal highlight came on the final day of the dual-match season when the Cardinals upended two top-30 squads, defeating Oneonta St. (#23), 26-12, and Williams (#28), 21-18.
