Wrestling has 3 Placewinners at Northeast Regional, led by NCAA Qualifier Ryan Sblendorio '15 at 174 Pounds

Competing at the Northeast Regional tournament, hosted by Roger Williams Sat.-Sun., Feb. 28-March 1, Wesleyan had three of its nine participants place among the top six in their respective weight class, led by Ryan Sblendorio '15 (photo) at 174 pounds as he went 4-1 to finish third. As a result, he earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Champsionships to be held in Hershey, Pa. Fri.-Sat., Match 13-14. The top three finishers in each weight class get an invitation to Nationals. Sblendorio, who was seeded fifth, opened his action with a pin against a Southern Maine rival. He then upset the fourth seed from Norwich, 13-11, with a takedown during sudden-victory overtime. That put him in a semifinal against the top seed from RWU, who went on to win the title. Sblendorio gave a solid accounting of himself, falling by a tight 5-3 count. In order to gain a spot in the NCAAs, Sblendorio had to win his next two matches. He made short work of the first bount with a first-period pin over the #7 seed from WPI. He then faced the #2 seed from Oneonta, and overpowered him with a 10-3 win, wrapping up a spot at Nationals.
