Cardinal Wrestlers Return Many Veterans, Talented Frosh Class for Promising Outlook to 2007-08

Coming off a very successful 2006-07 wrestling season during which Dan deLalla '07 repeated as New England 157-pound Champion, the 2007-08 Cardinals boast six individuals who earned all-New England places during their careers. Last year's squad posted the fifth winning mark in the last seven seasons with an 11-7-1 dual-match record and finished third of 15 at the NECCWA duals. Leading the Cardinals into the 2007-08 season is team captain Josh Wildes '08 (photo), a two-time New England placewinner including a third-place showing at 133 pounds in 2007. Three others return as 2007 NECCWA honorees as Dan Bloom '10 was second at 125, Zach Rolfe '10 fifth at 165 and Jeremy Stuart sixth at 184. In addition, Don Torrenti '08 (6th at 125 in 2005) and Mike Lima '08 (5th at 197 in 2006) have all-New England laurels in their history. Other returnees who saw the mat for at least five dual matches in 2006-07 are Kyle Baicker-McKee '10 (141), Greg Hurd '10 (165), Chris Mixon '09 (174), Alex Segal '09 (184) and John Gottfried '09 (197/Hwt). Wesleyan has eight newcomers to the program, a majority of whom have state qualifying and place-taking in their background. Wesleyan is ranked sixth in the preseason NECCWA coaches poll released Oct. 29. Wesleyan's opening varsity activity will be the annual Doug Parker Invitatonal at Springfield Sat., Nov 17. The weekend before that, the Cardinals participated in the Roger Williams Invitational as a preseason tune-up.
