Wesleyan began the 2008-09
campaign with a trip to Roger Williams for its invitational tournament
Sat., Nov. 15 and returned with fifth place among 12 teams. Six
Cardinals placed among the top six in their weight class led by Dan
Bloom '10 (upper half of photo), who captured the title at 125 pounds.
He fashioned a 4-0 record in a field of 20 entrants. Chris Alvanos '11
took fifth at the same weight.
Greg Hurd '10 (lower half of photo) nailed down second place at 174
pounds. He posted a 3-1 mark with his loss in the finals coming by a 5-4
count to All-American Jerome Owens of Johnson & Wales who is
currently ranked fourth nationally. Dan Conroy '11 was the third-place
finisher at heavyweight with a 4-1 mark while Dave Bachy '10 and Josh
Berkovic '10 both claimed fifth place at 149 pounds and 165 pounds,
respectively.
The team wrestled next at Springfield College for the annual Doug Parker
Invitational Sat., Nov. 22. Bloom repeated as a champion, defeating
last year's NEWA winner Ethan Cohen of Williams in the title match, 3-1,
to complete a 5-0 run. There were 27 wrestlers entered in his weight
class. Hurd went undefeated (5-0) to claim the crown, also with a 3-1
win in the title match. His weight class featured a field of 36
competitors. Bachy, Berkovic and Alvanos all repeated as placewinners -
Bachy, who has faced several nationally ranked opponents thus far and
lost close bouts, finished sixth while Berkovic and Alvanos both placed
fifth for the second straight weekend. Two other Cardinals - Vin
deLalla '11 at 141 and Zach Rolfe '10 at 165 - were one victory shy of
placing with 3-2 records.
The final action of the first semester comes up Sat., Dec. 6 when the
team journeys to R.I.T. for its invitational tournament.
