Women's Soccer Ends Banner Year with Semi-Final NESCAC Loss at Amherst - Laura Kurash '13 Named First-Team All-NESCAC, All-New England & District Academic All-American
Playing undefeated, top-seeded and nationally ranked #8 Amherst in a NESCAC semi-final matchup Sat., Nov. 5, the Cardinals held the Lord Jeffs off the board in the first half, thanks to seven first-half saves by goalie Jess Tollman '15 (#30, photo insert lower left). Amherst broke through the Wesleyan defense early in the second half, netting a marker just 3:27 into the second period, and added two more goals in the 70th and 80th minutes, to pick up its second 3-0 victory over Wesleyan in a two-week time frame. Amherst advances to the NESCAC title game against Williams, which got past Middlebury on penalty kicks in its semi-final. Wesleyan, with help from top-scorer Laura Kurash '13 (#8, main photo), posted its second-highest number of victories in a season in program history with a 9-6-1 final record. Only thre 1994 squad that went 12-4-1 had more victories. The Cardinals also defeated five NESCAC rivals for the first time ever in a single season, with wins over Bowdoin, Colby, Bates, Conn. College and Trinity. Kurash was named first-team all-NESCAC for the second year in a row as well as CoSIDA/Capital One District II Academic All-American and first-team NSCAA all-New England with her 13 goals and four assists during the year, with six of her goals counting as game-winners.
