Cards Win Team Crown in Grass Court Doubles Tourney, End Fall Campaign with 4-0 Dual Record

Competing in the Grass Court Doubles Tournament in Newport, R.I. Sun., Oct. 4, Wesleyan reached the finals in all three flights and captured two titles to claim a team championship over six other entries. Winning eight of nine matches, the Cardinals amassed 16 team points. Stonehill was second with 12. No other team had more than six points.

Though the tournament had to be played at two hard-court surfaced areas in the vicinity due to heavy rains the night before, it didn't dampened the Cardinals' effort as the tandem of Meredith Holmes '10 (photo upper left) and Genevieve Aniello '13 (photo upper right) combined to go 3-0 in Flight B en route to a title. They defeated a couple from Stonehill 8-5 in the finals. Also victorious for Wesleyan with a Flight C trophy was Casey Simchik '10 (photo lower left) and Linda McDougal '11 (photo lower right), also going 3-0 with an 8-2 finals win over a pair from Salve Regina.

In Flight A, Anika Fischer '10 and Sarah Miller '12 combined to reach the finals but fell to a Stonehill team, 9-7, to post a 2-1 mark.

The Cardinals returned to dual match action at Mount Holyoke Wed., Oct. 7. Wesleyan rolled to a 9-0 decision as the team dropped just one set during the match. The Cards used their top six players in both singles and doubles with all proving victorious. Miller, at #2, and Simchik, at #6, were the most dominant with 6-0, 6-1 wins while each was part of an 8-2 doubles triumph as well, Miller at #1 and Simchik at #3.

Wesleyan closed out the fall portion of its schedule Sat., Oct. 10 with a trip to Simmons. There the Cardinals prevailed, 8-1, to end its fall campaign with a perfect 4-0 mark. Leading the way during the fall with 4-0 records in both singles and doubles were Aniello, McDougal and Simchik.

The squad resumes action during its spring trip in March.
