Cards Back Nearly Intact After Qualifying for NESCAC Tournament Behind 11-7 Mark in 2007-08

Wesleyan came through with a solid 11-6 regular-season record in 2007-08, including NESCAC wins over Conn. College, Bates, Colby, Hamilton and Trinity. As the sixth seed in the NESCAC tournament last spring, Wesleyan took third-seeded Tufts down to the wire before falling by a narrow 5-4 margin. The 2008-09 Cardinals, under the leadership of team captain and number-one player Ania Preneta '09 (photo), lost no players to graduation. As a result the team returns eight players who represented the squad a year ago though Anika Fischer '10 will be absent until the second semester. Preneta, Rachael Ghorbani '09 and Madalina Ursu '09 will return to their primary positions in both singles and doubles. Preneta and Ghorbani, as well as Fischer, were second-team all-NESCAC picks last year. The four other players back include Linda McDougal '11, Meredith Holmes '10, Casey Simchik '10 and Alex Sirois '09. With a number of newcomers expected to join the troops, first-year Sarah Miller '12 is a likely candidate to move into a starting berth right away. Before the team inaugurates the varsity dual-match season at R.I.C. Thurs., Sept. 11, the squad will participate in a doubles competition in Newport, R.I., Sat., Sept. 6.
