Cardinal Women Come up with Strong Efforts over the Last Four Weeks of Competition, Three at Home

Wesleyan produced a dozen top-three finishes during the Wesleyan Invitational II Sat., Jan. 16. Highlighting the results was the first-place effort of Ravenna Neville '10 (main photo), whose 18:29.92 in the 5k was good enough for several regional meet qualifications. Neville was a cross-country All-American during the fall season. Also securing a top prize was Ashley Swan '13 with a 32-7 1/4 toss in the weight throw.

Swan also had one of the Cardinals' five silver medals, that coming in the shot put. Kathryn Kulowski '11 (photo insert upper right) was second in the long jump while Lane Harris '13 was runner-up in the weight throw, as was Lia Monti '13 in the 400m and Ceili Brennan '13 in the 800m. Third-place performances came from Monti in the 200m, Kulowski in the high jump, Kiran Sheffrin '10 in the 55m hurdles, Sarah Hensiek '13 in the 600m and Kora Shin '10 in the weight throw.

Wesleyan was joined by 17 additional teams for the Wesleyan Invitational III Sat., Jan. 23. No Cardinal placed first during the meet but Wesleyan had a second-place showing by Julia Frieze '12 (photo insert lower right) in the 600m. Brennan was third in the event. Also placing third was Kulowski in the triple jump. Kulowski grabbed fourth in the high jump while Monti did the same in the 400m. Cardinals coming through with fifth-place efforts included Sheffrin in the 55m hurdles, Hensiek in the 800m and Jessica Levin '11 in the mile.

Going up against some high-powered competition at the Boston Indoor Games at Northeastern Fri., Jan. 29, Wesleyan was unable to crack into the scoring column. Top finishes for the Cardinals came from Julia Mark '13 in the 3k (13th, 10:28.90), Monti in the 400 (15th, 1:01.80) and Neville in the mile (19th, 5:21.04).

The Cardinals moved away from home for the Stampede Invitational at Tufts Sat., Feb. 6. There Wesleyan had four individuals place among the top five in an event as Frieze was second of 20 in the 400m while Monti was fifth ; Neville finished third of 20 in the 3k ; and Isabella Cucchi took fifth of 30 in the 55m dash. In addition, the 4x800m relay squad of Brennan, Hensiek, Levin and Helen DeKorne '12 came in first of eight entries with a time of 9:56.05, an average of 2:29 a runner. Frieze and Monti joined Beth Kenworthy '10 and Sheffrin for a second-place finish among six squads in the 4x400m relay. Wesleyan's distance medley squad was second of three.

Over the weekend of Feb. 12-13, Wesleyan athletes will have a chance to compete at one of two difference venue as Wesleyan hosts the Collegiate Track Championships while other elite individuals will run against some tough competition at Boston U.'s annual Valentine's Invitational.
