Traveling to Philadelphia for the prestigious Penn Relays at Franklin Field Thurs., April 26, Ellen Davis '07 (photo courtesy of NCAA Photos) placed seventh of 29 runners in the collegiate women's championship 5k event with a time of 16:28.22. Her time is currently the fastest in the country in Division III this season and is the eighth fastest time ever by a Division III runner. Of the 29 runners in the field, only three were not from Division I colleges. The previous best time at Wesleyan outdoors for the 5k was done by Jill Quigley in 1980 (16:57.9) and the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAAs this season is 17:00. This was Davis' first 5k since winning the indoor NCAA title March 10 with a time of 16:43.73. Taking part in the 1500m race at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Middlebury Sat., April 28, Davis placed sixth (4:44.72) while Steph O'Brien '08 led the way with a fifth-place showing in the 800m (2:17.59) and anchored the 4x400m relay to sixth place. As a team, the Cardinals placed 10th. At the New England Div. III meet hosted by Springfield May 3-5, O'Brien improved her 800m time slightly to 2:17.4 while capturing second place. Also scoring for the Cardinals at Springfield was Lucia Pier '08 with a seventh-place finish in the 5k. The next action for the team will be at Dartmouth May 10-12 for the New England Open.
