Hosting the Wesleyan Invitational II on Sat., Jan. 26, Wesleyan got two first-place finishes as Haleigh Smith '11 (main photo courtesy of Sam Kurtis '10) captured the mile in 5:22.38 while Steph O'Brien '08 (photo insert lower right) came through in the 500m with a 1:18.96 effort. The Cardinals had 12 individuals grab top-eight postings in the 17-team meet with other standout performances coming from Kiran Sheffrin '10, who was fourth in the 200m (:28.18) and seventh in the 55m hurdles (:09.49) ; Lynn Edmonds '11, who cruised to second place in the 400m (1:01.90) ; and Sokki Chham '11, whose 15-11 3/4 long jump earned her a third-place showing among 32 entrants. The team headed to Tufts University for its invitational Sat., Feb. 2 and once again O'Brien and Smith captured crowns, but in different events. O'Brien's 2:17.75 in the 800m topped 34 other competitors while the 10:32.87 clocking of Smith in the 3k was best among 34 runners and provided her with a three-second winning margin. As a team, Wesleyan was ninth of 14 squads. Wesleyan returned to host the Cardinal Invitational Sat., Feb. 9 where a third-place finish in the 55m hurdles by Sheffrin was the top performance. On Feb. 8, however, several Cardinals ventured to Boston U. for its annual Valetine's Invitational. There, O'Brien ran a 2:16.31 for 800m to place 23rd of 141 entrants and fourth among Division III runners. Her time is good enough for provisional qualification to the NCAAs. Smith also had an outstanding effort with an 18:05.92 in the 5k, good for 28th place among 79 runners, and seventh of the Division III entries. Wesleyan will be back at Tufts Sat., Feb. 16 for another invitational.
