Hosting the first of four invitationals during the 2009-10 indoor track season, Wesleyan let its sprinters and middle-distance runners do most of the work with some help from a couple of throwers to inaugurate the campaign.
With six other schools in attendance, the Cardinals had a chance to test their talents against some outside competition and came away with four sprint titles. Capturing the 55m hurdles with a time of :15.37 was team co-captain Kiran Sheffrin '10 (main photo, upper left). Joining her as the 55m dash champ was newcomer Isabelle Cucchi '13 (photo insert lower left) with a solid winning time of :07.62 after running a :07.60 in the trials.
Moving to the 600m event, another newcomer came through for the Cardinals as Lia Monti '13 (photo insert lower right) separated herself from her rivals with a 1:44.33 clocking. Wesleyan's fourth top finish came from Julia Frieze '12 (photo insert upper right) as her 2:33.24 was the class of the field in the 800m race. Close behind in second was Helen DeKorne '12 (2:35.78). Wesleyan's 4x400m relay of Monti, Beth Kenworthy '10, DeKorne and Frieze was second in 4:14.01.
Throwers Ashley Swan '13 and Lane Harris '13 finished second and third, respectively, in the weight throw with performances of
32-7 1/2 and 31-4 1/2.
The next action for the squad comes up Sat., Jan. 16 when the Cardinals host their second invitational.
