Cards Shine in Jerry Gravel Classic at Westfield St. & Coast Guard Invite to Open Outdoor Campaign

Ravenna Neville '10, Kathryn Kulowski '11, and Julia Mark '13

With three individual second-place postings and a pair of runner-up relay performances, Wesleyan collected 76 team points during the Jerry Gravel Classic at Westfield St. Sat., March 27, good enough to tie for third place as a team among 18 participating squads.

Grabbing second place in the 10k with a time of 37:41.90 was Ravenna Neville '10 (main photo). Kathryn Kulowski '11 (photo insert lower left by SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com) skied 5-0 to nab second in the high jump while Julia Mark '13 (photo insert upper left) secured runner-up status in the 1500m event (4:48.71).

Both Kulowski and Mark were part of a second-place relay as Mark was on the 4x400m squad and Kulowski was a 4x100m entry. All the members of the 4x100m relay were individual placewinners as well. Kiran Sheffrin '10 was 4th in the 100m hurdles, Lia Monte '13 placed 5th in the 400m and Isabella Cucchi '13 was 6th in the long jump.

Ceili Brennan '13 (4th in the 800m) and Julia Frieze '12 (3rd in 400m) were on the 4x400m relay, too.

In total, Wesleyan had 15 placewinning efforts with five 2nds, a 3rd, three 4ths, two 5ths, a 6th, a 7th and two 8ths.

Wesleyan looked to do equally well in its next outing Sat., April 3 at the Coast Guard Invitational. The Cardinals again amassed third-place points, this time among 11 teams in a very tight team finish. Less than 10 points separated the top five squads with Wesleyan just four points out of first.

First-place postings befell three Cardinals as Neville grabbed the top spot in the 1500m race as the only individual among the 31 entrants in the race to eclipsed five minutes (4:59.86). Mark was the victor at 800m (2:23.11) and Sarah White '11 nailed down a win in the 5k (18:34.68). Kulowski was the high-jump runner-up once again while the 4x400m relay also secured second place. In total, 17 Cardinals contributed to the team's 98 points with a top-eight placing.

The Cardinals will host their only event of the spring Sat., April 10 when the annual Elmer Swanson Invitational takes place in Middletown.
