2004 ALUMNI/AE RACE

Eight men and one woman from years past came back for the 2004 alumni/ae cross-country race Saturday, September 4.  The event was the first race held on the new on-campus trail along Long Lane.  Pictured are (L to R):  Dan Lazarek '03, Greg Murphy '81, Vince Buccola '03, Mike Slowik '03, Amy Burfoot '68, Walter Severini '73, John Hastings '71, Tom Kiely (father '06), Dave Buddington '63, Ann Dunham '79 and former cross-country coach Elmer Swanson.

Thirty-five hardy participants, including eight alums, two guests, 12 varsity women and 13 varsity men, charge out of the starting gate on the signal of former head coach Elmer Swanson.

Courtney Quirin '05 (right) and Ellen Davis '07 (left), both of whom competed in the NCAA Division III Championships in 2003, lead the way in the women's 3.4k race.  Courtney nipped Ellen at the finish line, covering the course in 13:15.66 while Davis ran a 13:16.49.

Ann Dunham '79 has been the most consistent representative among women alumnae at cross-country races.  She has run in seven of the last 10 alumnae events and in many more prior to 1995.  Ann was the first Wesleyan woman to compete for four years, debuting with the men's x-country team in 1975 before the women's first varsity season in 1976.

Owen Kiely '06 sprinted home with the men's title over the 5k course in a time of 16:22.  He edged out Wes Fuhrman '05, who placed second in 16:32.  The top finisher among the eight alums who competed was Mike Slowik '03, as he came in third in a time of 16:43. One of Wesleyan's most distinguished alumni runners, Amby Burfoot '68 took to the trail this year.  The executive editor of Runner's World magazine, Amby is the only collegian to win a Boston Marathon, doing so while a Wesleyan senior in 1968.
