Ruby May Lafayette married to Arthur Peter White dit LeBlanc in Vermont

Forward: What I've learned from doing genealogical research is that "we" are truly not alone. From the French Canadian research I've seen that all French-Canadians are related in one way or another. Most likely then all French folks in France are related to them too. Through Irish and Scots research I've found the same. It is not hard then to transpose that thought into the realization that all people and by inference all DNA related creatures on the planet Earth are related.

In doing research on the familes of both the LeBlancs "Whites" and Lafayettes I've been fortunate in meeting several wonderful people whose research has added immeasurably to our understanding of certain family histories. Their work has enabled me to compile the notes to further understand the lineage of my own family and hopefully to assist others in finding their "roots."

Genealogical research is not an individual search but rather a continuing group effort to put names and faces to the ever lengthening list of ancestors who preceed us. We are indebted to those record keepers of the past who made the initial entries, then to the researchers who came later and compiled that informaton into volumes of research material, and to the organizations who grew up and found ways to utilize that research. Finally we should be thankful to the individuals who have used these books and organizations to compile their own histories and in so doing help us to understand our own lineage.

As Tokien says, or is it Bilbo Baggins, " . .  the road goes ever on . . ."

Some Notes on The LAFAYETTE/DEFAYETTE/FAILLE/FAYE FAMILY

(as compiled  by R.J. White (#192 Ct. Fr. Can. Gen.Soc. of Ct.)

My grandfather Arthur Peter LeBlanc (anglecized to White) met grandmother Ruby May LaFayette in Vermont.  They were married in Lowell, Massachusetts at St. Louis Church on 3 Mar. 1908. We have a considerable amount of genealogy on grandfather Arthur Peter's family  through his ancestors who were of Acadian descent. But, concerning Ruby LaFayette, little information is known about her.

Ruby's father James Buchanan Lafayette was a Vermont stone-cutter. He was married to Angeline Noreau at Chazy New York in 1886. Records for the early centuries from that part of the country are sketchy and so my genealogy concerning Ruby's parents and ancestors is equally vague. Grandmother Ruby never said very much about her own childhood. Since her father, James Buchanan Lafayette died when she was sixteen we assume that life around Ruby's home was anything but pleasant.

With the help of Tressa Lafayette and her husband "Red" I have been able to patch together the family genealogy going back to Napierville, Canada, and I am fairly certain that my connections to "Uncle" Mathew Faye of Auvergne are correct, via Joseph Faille then Claude Joseph Faille, but my records are not very precise. Though, I have little doubt that the Lafayette family is connected to the French King's 35th Infantry Regiment, the Carignan Regiment who arrived in Quebec in 1665 for the purpose of defending the French colonists from Iroquois attacks.

Claude Joseph Faille's uncle, Mathew Faye dit Lafayette, the son of Claude and Marie Sullier b-1641 at St. Jean, diocese of Clermont, Auvergne, was married to Marguerite Francoise Maureau, the daughter of Francois and Francoise Gardien of St. Sulpice, Paris, on 30, Sept. 1670.

Mathew was a soldier in the company La Varenne, Carignan Regiment; he was killed by Iroquois and died 19 Aug. 1695 at Lachine, Canada. We know that Mathew was the Uncle of Claude Joseph Faye who married Jeanne Perras in 1688 at Laprairie and can assume that Mathew's brother, whose name has not as yet been clarified, was the father of Claude Joseph Faye.

By inference then since Claude Faye who married Marie Sullier in the early 1600s at St. Jean-d'Aubrigoux was Mathew's father he was also probably Claude Joseph Faye's grandfather.

A  tentative genealogy for Ruby May Lafayette, born of James Buchanan Lafayette and Angeline Noreau on Nov. 17, 1888 at Worcester, Mass can be created:

            GENEALOGY OF RUBY MAY LAFAYETTE

1. Ruby May Lafayette m. Arthur Peter LeBlanc (White).

4. Pierre de Lafayette m. M. Agnes Surprenant.

7. Claude Joseph Faye m. Jeanne Perras.

8. Claude Faille 1640- and Catherine Maville.1590-1644.

9. Claude Faye m. Marie Sullier.  1599-1644 *
    * (m. early 1600s (de St Jean-d'Aubrigoux?) France.)

( Mathew Faye was a brother of Claude Faille who was married to Catherine Maville.)

Our Lafayette research took on a different look after the visit of  visiting genealogist Tressa Lafayette and her husband "Red." I visited with them for a day and showed them several places in New England  where there might be information on the Lafayette family. Both Red and Tressa then travelled up to the  library in Tolland, then Springfield, and finally upper New York State.

Several weeks later I received a letter from Tressa with a printout of the information she had accumulated through the U.S.A. census along  with the additional information she had found with the help of Addie Shields at New York State.
The New York information provided a crucial link for us and enabled me to then "plug" that information into the Tolland library books, researching back to Napierville, which was also the "stamping grounds" of our LeBlanc family.

Later, when visiting in Napierville, I visited with author/researcher Mr. Foucault. and obtained a copy of his repetoire on the Napierville area, and found both an interesting connection to our branch of the LeBlancs and to the Defayettes (Lafayettes) during the Canadian Revolution of 1837, where both families had fought beside one another against British tyranny. This time the English won the battle and several "revolutionaries" were exiled to Australia, including a LeBlanc and a Defayette. At the time, my great-great grandfather Louis LeBlanc was an infant so he was not directly involved in the revolution, but certainly was affected by this confrontation.

Continuing research the earliest Lafayette/Defayette ancestors eluded me, they were there, somewhere, and I knew it, but I couldn't find links to connect them, so our odyssey went on:

Then, through the Internet I "met" Tom and Bernice Defayette and sent them my notes on the Lafayette/Defayette family. Soon we had a regular correspondence going. My own research on the family Lafayette had come to a standstill and so it was gratifying to see Tom and Bernice take over and delve into the problems and missing links. Then one day through diligent investigation they found our missing ancestor in Claude Faille 1640- and Catherine Mavile. Claude was the son of Claude Lafayette/Faye and Marie Sulier and father of Claude Frances lafaille dit lafayette who married Jean Catherine Perras.

Still there were many details in this complex family history to fill in and stories to find, but there was a sense of completeness in now having the line back to the ancestors in France. Of course there was still the question of whether our Lafayette family was related somehow to the Marquis de Lafayette but then again, that's the nature of genealogical research, when you finish one search there's always the next mystery to be solved.

During a weekend at the Fr. Can. Gen. Society in Tolland, Ct. I did some researching into their newly purchased blue-covered Bergeron books and found references to DeFayettes in the Repentigny area; specially:

In the Repetoire Alphabetique Des Marriages Canadian Francais de  1760 a 1935 by Claude Drouin I found listed:

DEFAILLET, PIERRE m. SURPRENANT, M. AGNES at L'Acadie: 31-Jan 1791 (his parents: PRE & PAQUET, JOS. )  (her parents: Jos & Lamarre, Genev.)

DEFAILLET, PIERRE m. LUCIER, M. REINE at L'Acadie 9-Oct-1815

(In the Marriages a Notre Dame de Montreal by Bergeron p. 295.
 I found :
Lafayette, Mathiew m. 30-09-1670.
(his parents: Claude & Sulier, M. of Auvergne)  (her parents: Frs.   &  Maureaux, Marg of Paris).

Editors note:  I did much of my initial research at the French Canadian Society in Tolland, Ct., and some work in Montreal. But, still, I was stuck in a Cul de sac with Pierre Defaillet and Josette Paquet. So I decided to accumulate as much information as I could to see  where it would take me, and have included my notes below:

   -----------------------------------------------------------------

Lafayette/Defayette/Research Notes

There are problems here with my genealogical records as I have not conclusively proven that the Pierre Defaillet  who married Josette Paquet is the one listed above, married in 1760, but this family seems to fit into our jig-saw pattern and, for the time being, I will put them into our family history in that assumption and try to prove or disprove the connection.

But I feel comfortable that the Pierre Defaillet that I'm looking for who married Josette Paquet is the son of Joesph Faille who married Catherine Tabeau in 1726.

The problem here is with conflicting records which according to one researcher show Jos. Paquets parents as Noel, and M. Anne Hertaut.  And in another author's work they are shown as  Pierre Louis Paquet and her mother's name as Marie-Eliz Piedalu.(In the first researcher's work Josette's  grandfather was Noel, married to Marg. Baudet (who has been listed before as Hertaut).

 THE FAMILY LAFAYETTE dit DEFAYETTE,LAFAYE,FAILLE,FAYE

A recordable family history of Ruby M. Lafayette begins with the French ancestors, Claude Faye of Auvergne, France, who was married to Marie Sullier.

1. CLAUDE FAYE m. MARIE SULLIER dioc. of Clermont in the province  of Auvergne, France. .
His parents: Unknown.
Her parents: Unknown.
 Children:
    1A.Claude Faille 1640- m.Catherine Mavile) (our ancestors). 1590-1644

1 B. Mathew Faye m. 30-9-1670 Marguerite Francoise Maureau at St.  Sulpice,Paris. (Marguerites parents were: Francois & Francoise  Gardien of St. Sulpice, Paris.

============================================================

1A.  Claude Faille 1640 m. Catherine Mavile the father of Claude Faye who married Marie Sullier of Clermont, Auvergne, France, and their grandchild Claude Faye who married Jeanne Perras in 1688 at Laprairie, Quebec. The family of Claude Faye and Jeanne Perras who came to Canada in the 1600's was probably part of the Carrignan-Salieres Regiment who was shipped over from Europe during the 1600s to fight off  maurauding Iroquois Indians who were slaughtering the settlers.

It is possible that further research will discover the identities of our missing ancestors in France, or then again those ancestors may remain hidden in the fog of time. Who knows! Fortunately we have the relationship between Claude Faye and his uncle Mathieu Lafayette, who we know was a soldier of the Carrignan Regiment, to connect us with Claude Faye and Marie Sullier in Auvergne, France. And so, the journey back to the homeland can be completed, but the search continues.

* Note: In 2001 Tom and Bernice Defayette discovered the origin of our missing ancestor in Claude Faille m. Catherine Mavile and so the mystery of the missing ancestor was solved.)

"Genealogical Queries: 354. Faille-Lamirande. I am trying to locate a marriage record of Edouard De Lamirande and Delphine Faille, Sept. 14, 1852. they were Catholic. I do not know what parish they were from in Quebec. they are thought to have come to Wisconsin from Quebec in 1870. (Diane Hershberger, 4064 S. Hately Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53207).

Reply: Their marriage was perfomed at Saint-Remi de Napierville, Que. on Sept 14-l-1852. The Canadian ancestor of the Faille family is Claude Faye whose parents' names are not given unfortunately in his marriage certificate at Laprairie, Que. in 1688. Moreover he seems not to have made a marriage contract before a notary. Nevertheless, we know that he was the nephew of Mathieu Faye who came here in 1665 with the Carignan Regiment. He was a soldier in the company of Monsieur de Varennes (Basset, notary, 17 sept. 1667).

When he married in Montreal in 1670, Mathieu Faye says that he was the son of Claude Faye and Marie Sullier of Saint-Jean, dio. of Clermont, in the province of Auvergne, France. Claude Faye, the Canadian, is therefore the grandson of Claude Faye and Marie Sullier. Here is your Faille lineage:

FAILLE GENEALOGY OF DIANE HERSHBERGER:

I -   FAILLE, Delphine (dau. of Andre & Falvie Boire)
DE LAMIRANDE, Edouard (son of Jean-Bte & Reine Desmarais)
marriage: Saint-Remi de Napierville, Que. Sept. 14, 1852.

II -  FAILLE, Andre (son of Joseph & Francoise Brossard)
BOIRE, Flavie (dau of Joseph & Isabelle Vachereau)
      marriage: Saint-Phillippe de Laprairie, Feb. 14, 1831.

III.  FAILLE, Joseph (son of Joseph & Angelique Dupuis)
BROSSARD, Francoise (dau of Urbain & Catherine Lemaire)
marriage: Laprairie, Que., Oct. 7, 1793.

IV.  FAILLE, Joseph (son of Joseph & Catherine Tabeau
DUPUIS, Angelique (dau of Jean-Bte & Suzanne Leber)
      marriage:Saint-Constant de Laprairie, July 30, 1770.

V.  FAILLE, Joseph (son of Claude & Jeanne Perras)
TABEAU, Catherine (dau of Pierre & Catherine Brunet)
marriage: Laprairie, Que., March 4, 1726.

VI. FAYE, Claude (name of parents not given).
PERRAS, Jeanne (dau of Pierre & Denise Lemaitre)
marriage: Laprairie, Que., October 25, 1688."

Claude's uncle, Mathew Faye dit Lafayette, the son of Claude and Marie Sullier b-1641 at St.

Jean-d'Aubrigoux was Mathew's father he was also Claude Joseph Faye's grandfather.

A  "tentative" genealogy then for Ruby May Lafayette, born of James Buchanan Lafayette and Angeline Noreau on Nov. 17, 1888 at Worcester, Mass is outlined as follows:

FAYE GENEALOGY OF RUBY MAY LAFAYETTE:

1. Ruby May Lafayette m. Arthur Peter LeBlanc (White).
     (m. 3 Mar. 1908 at St. Louis  Church, Lowell, Mass.)

2. James Buchanan Lafayette m. Angeline Noreau.
     (m. 1886 at Chazy, New York.)

3. Pierre Lafayette m. 1. M. Reine Lussier.
     (m. 9-10-1815 at L'Acadie, Canada.)
3. Pierre Lafayette m. 2. Matilda ------- ---------.
     (m. --------- at New York, USA)

4. Pierre de Lafayette m. M. Agnes Surprenant.
     (m. 30-01-1791 L'Acadie, Canada).

5. Pierre DeLafayette m. M. Josette Paquet.
     (m. somewhere around 1760s at St Marguerite's church, Canada)

6. Joseph Faille m. Catherine Tabeau.
    (m. 04-03-1726 at Laprairie, Canada.)

7. Claude Joseph Faye m. Jeanne Perras. (1671-1718)
     (m. 25-10-1688 at Laprairie, Canada).

8. Claude Faille m. Catherine Maville.

9. Claude Faye m. Marie Sullier. (1599-1644)
   (m. early 1600s (de St Jean-d'Aubrigoux?) France.)

=======================================================

It is now June, 1995 and, due to a long and protracted illness in my family,  I have been away from the genealogical search for a good five years. So, much of this research has taken place during the years from 1985 to 1990 and I am starting again where I left off.

I have renewed my membership with the French Canadian Genealogical Society in Tolland, and plan to go back to the "stacks" in hope of finding new books there which cover areas and time-spans previously not accessed, in the hope of filling in missing information and proving-out possible relationships.

Genealogically yours,

Robert J. White dit (LeBlanc).
son of Arthur J. White & Catherine Moore
grandson of Ruby M. Lafayette & Arthur P. White dit LeBlanc.

Now several years later, the year 2001, to be exact two fellow Lafayette/Defayette researchers, husband and wife Tom and Bernice have continued the research and discovered what was heretofore the unknown ancestor, the missing link in the family tree.

The following is one result of their search:

Mathieu is the uncle of Claude who married Jeanne Perras and the cousin of
Benoit and Etienne Bisaillon. He is 40 in the census of 1681 at LaPrairie,
and a soldier in the company of LaVarenne, in the Carignan Regiment.

Mathieu's parents are listed as as Claude and Marie Sullier, so they would be the
grandparents of Claude who married Jeanne Perras. They were of St Jean
d'Aubrigoux, ar LePuy, ev Clernont, Auverne (Haute-Loire).

The lineage that you submitted is accurate.
1- Claude Faye dit Lafayette/ Marie Sulier
          2- ?
3- Claude Faye or Faille/ Jeanne Perras
4- Joseph Faye or Faille/ Catherine Tabeau
          5- Pierre Faillet/ Josette Paquet  ****
Altough we do not know the names of the parents of Claude (# 3
above). We know that his grandfather was Claude (1)
because Claude (3) 's  uncle, Mathieu who married Marguerite Moreau in
Montreal in 1670, was the son
of Claude (1) and Marie Sulier.
*****          With regards to Pierre Faillet and Josette Paquet, your
reference toSt.Marguerite Canada as the place where they were married in
1760 is doubtful. This "St.Marguerite" must be the parish of
Sainte-Marguerite de Blairfindie in the town of L'Acadie, Quebec, not to far
from La Prairie. This parish was founded in 1785 only, but the couple
probably lived there at one time because two of their children were married
in that parish ; Pierre with Agnes Surprenant in 1791 and Marie-Anne with
Pierre Fordais in 1795.****

If General LaFayette was born sept. 6, 1757
married Adrienne de Noailles April 11, 1774
the general's father in 1759
Mother died 1770 (just a thought if this date is accurate maybe
she married again)
The General had children:
George Washington LaFayette (son)
Anastasie born 1777 (daughter)
Henriette who died in 1778 (daughter)
Virgine born Sept. 1783

The General is said to have had one brother that is record as
Jean B. De Lafayette.  Do you known if the General had a brother named Jean
B. De LaFayette?  Did the General have more brothers and sisters?
In my family tree program it states that Jean B. LaFayette came to the
U.S. when he was 13 after the Revolutionary War. Where did all these Fayes
and LaFayette's Born in Canada come into the General's family.
Claude (the French) married Marie Sullier early 1600

The General's father died abt. 1759.  Then in order for the to be
LaFayette's of Canadian descend perhaps the General's father great great
granfather are of direct descend.  In other words Claude (the
Frenchman)could maybe be maybe the 3rd great grandfather of the General.

We need to find out who was the General's grandfather, and great grandfather,
and great great grand father.  Probably imposable to do.
and I am just thinking so the reasoning I wrote above is just my reasoning.

How do you think that the LaFayettes/DeFayette's
of Canada are related to the General?  I know you have no infor on this just
your own personal opinion?

Reply soon,
Bernice & Tom DeFayette
