Wesleyan University is a private,
nonsectarian university with 2,763 undergraduates, equally divided between men
and women, and about 180 graduate students. Its operations are supported by an
endowment of $439,708,000. Wesleyan's programs will be bolstered in the future
by an ambitious capital campaign which aims to raise $250,000,000 over the
next five years to recruit new faculty, purchase new scientific equipment,
renovate many facilities on the Wesleyan campus, and construct new ones.
The Science Library, which catalogs
100,000 volumes and subscribes to more than 900 journals, is located in the
Science Center, built in 1970. Wesleyan shares library facilities with
Trinity and Connecticut colleges through an automated library network. Also
in the Science Center are the departments of mathematics, earth sciences and
physics, an extensive machine shop, a complete photography facility for
journal photographs and slides, and other scientific support facilities.
Wesleyan has seven public computing facilities located across campus. Each
lab offers both general-purpose computing facilities, as well as
discipline-specific instructional software and multimedia technology.
Computing facilities have been enhanced considerably by the recent addition
of a center for molecular graphics and computationally intensive projects.
Biological sciences and chemistry occupy Hall-Atwater and Shanklin
laboratories, located adjacent to the Science Center.
Other University facilities of note include: The Davenport Campus
Center houses a post office and several dining
areas; the Center for the Arts, an 11-building complex that is a
cultural center for Southern New England and offers hundreds of
theater, film, dance, music and other events annually. The Freeman
Athletic Center was built in the late 1980's and includes a new
field house and pool; there is also a 2,000 seat skating area in
the sports complex. More than 1,000 students, including graduate
students, participate in intramural sports.
Middletown is a community of about 45,000 people located on the
banks of the Connecticut River, close to Hartford and New Haven
and within a two hour drive of Boston and New York. It is close to
several state parks that present numerous opportunities for
recreation.
