4. Affirm the importance of a challenging mix of people and experiences.
"Diversity is really a hallmark of the Wesleyan experience. We define diversity broadly: It's about embracing many perspectives, many interests, many ways of being different-intellectual, social, regional, economic, cultural."

Wesleyan thrives on differences in how we think, how we spend our time, how we solve problems, what paths of inquiry we pursue, what games we play, what poets we read. Since the mid-sixties, Wesleyan has been out in front of other colleges and universities in our efforts toward pluralism and unity. The journey has not always been easy for the pioneers in this effort-students, faculty, administration, and alumni-but Wesleyan is a distinctive and proud institution because of its commitment to inclusion.
Wesleyan seeks talented students and faculty members from all backgrounds who want to be part of a residential university-a place where ideas can take off at any time of the day or night. We offer our scholars a vibrant mix of academic, cultural, and athletic programs. We insist on variety-in the curriculum, in housing options, in student activities, in symposia and discussions. We take advantage of a location that accommodates the hiker and the urban explorer. We are an interesting tapestry, woven from many different strands. We want to keep it that way.
Since the end of the Cold War, the world has opened its doors and lowered many traditional barriers. What better place to prepare for its challenges than Wesleyan-a truly diverse, truly inclusive community?
Wesleyan proudly leads the way toward equal opportunity and access for all in higher education. Our graduates can and will lead other people, different from them, in shaping the future.

THE PART THAT ART PLAYS IN ENRICHING THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY
Wesleyan has a long history of bringing a variety of distinguished artists to the campus, ranging from The National Theater of the Deaf, Martin Scorsese, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, and Jasper Johns to Denmark's Odin Teatret, an avant-garde theater company, which played to a sold-out house. These guest artists provide ongoing inspiration for Wesleyan's own student performers who maintain a full calendar of music, dance, and theater productions.
WESLEYAN SPIRIT MULTIPLIED
Over 600 students at Wesleyan participate in 29 intercollegiate varsity teams and more than 1,000-almost 40 percent of the student body-take part in intramural sports. The experience of athletics here is all about teamwork, discipline, and respect for one another-vital lessons for life beyond Wesleyan. Wesleyan students also organize and lead 187 student organizations, many of which are oriented to community service.
