"At Wesleyan I learned real science from world-class scholars, both in courses and in original-research laboratory work. But only at Wesleyan could I have done that and majored in philosophy at the same time! The balance of depth and breadth in opportunity, and the respect for this balance, is at the heart of what makes Wesleyan unique."

At Wesleyan, the question is as important as the answer. Our openness to ideas and possibilities has created some very talented thinkers. Bold entrepreneurs, committed nonprofit pioneers, acclaimed film directors, award-winning writers, notable trial lawyers, innovative educators, savvy corporate leaders, compassionate doctors and health service providers, wizards of technology, and insightful counselors fill our alumni ranks.
Investing in students at Wesleyan means investing in people like Herb Kelleher, Class of 1953, whose inspirational leadership helped Southwest Airlines develop into a pioneering, low-cost carrier and the nation's most consistently profitable airline.
It means giving a head start to an entrepreneurial scientist like Joshua Boger, Class of 1973, who left Merck to start a biotechnology company that develops new drugs to combat major diseases such as arthritis, cancer, hepatitis C, and HIV.
It means supporting an educator like Evelyn Gonzalez-Spivey,
Class of 1985, a doctoral student at Harvard's School of Education, and the new principal of a Jersey City charter school.

GROUNDED IN SELF-CONFIDENCE
Just one year after graduating from Wesleyan, Eliza Leighton, Class of 1995 and a current Wesleyan trustee, cofounded a nonprofit, Stand for Children. Today, she manages a staff of 16 and a budget of over $1 million, providing training and support to grassroots organizations around the country that serve families and children in need.
Asked how Wesleyan prepared her to guide a new nonprofit with a national reach, Eliza, the former captain of the lacrosse team, as well as an English major, notes that Wesleyan's diverse community taught her to listen openly to people from different backgrounds.
Eliza says her experiences at Wesleyan didn't consist of abstract theorizing about making a difference. "I was taught to think like an activist. At Wesleyan it wasn't enough to know something-you had to take action!"
