View ways to support teaching at Wesleyan.

Read what Wesleyan professors are saying about teaching at Wesleyan.

1. Invest in world-class teaching. "Wesleyan is small enough to feel like a community but big enough to house large ideas. The quality of interpersonal relationships and of the intellectual conversation is hard to match."

- Ann duCille, William R. Kenan Professor of the Humanities & Director of the Center for African American Studies

Wesleyan is synonymous with unrivaled teaching. Professors here spark a passion for learning and an impatience with easy answers, which can lead students to a lifetime of tireless inquiry-a payoff well worth the price of tuition. In every classroom, every lab, every corridor-across the disciplines-noted scholars who treasure teaching are engaging students in developing ideas, exploring ways to solve problems, and collaborating on research.

We value teaching so highly that increasing funds to support the faculty is a primary goal of this campaign. Our intention, with your help, is to add a total of 20 leading teacher-scholars to the campus community. These additions will lower the student-faculty ratio from 11:1 to just under 10:1, a change that is crucial to the individual exchanges we promote.

Your support will help us provide the competitive salaries, benefits, and start-up costs needed to attract the faculty we seek and to reward their enormous intellectual talent and commitment.

SOME POSSIBILITIES FOR YOUR GIFT

An endowment gift of $800,000 names the Writing Fellows Program, which brings three promising young writers to campus each year to teach creative and analytical writing workshops.

A $500,000 gift to the Campus Renewal Fund supports building projects like the new Center for Film Studies which will provide much-needed teaching and production space.

A $2 million endowment gift names a departmental professorship.

A $10,000 gift through the Wesleyan Annual Fund can support faculty salaries, helping us to recruit 20 new professors over 5 years.

A $3 million endowment gift names a University Professorship or an academic center directorship, and includes program funds and research support.

TALKING ABOUT TEACHING AT WESLEYAN...
"Wesleyan attracts the very brightest young faculty members because of the intellectual environment it provides. There is an active exchange among faculty members about writing projects in progress and about new scholarly ideas in their respective fields and across discipline boundaries. This intense-and generous-critiquing of ideas continues into the classroom, where faculty members encourage students to be as active in their analysis and criticism of ideas as their teachers are."

- John Paoletti, Professor of Art History

"To see students take hold, dig in, and truly grow right in front of my eyes is very rewarding. I have seen astonishing work done by Wesleyan students. I myself have the opportunity to learn and grow within my own classes because of the caliber of students who come here and because of their commitment, hard work, and passion."

- Jeanine Basinger, Corwin-Fuller Professor of Film Studies and Chair of the Film Studies Program

"So many companies are looking for confident, well-rounded people who can handle pressure and are willing to make quick decisions. Wesleyan really does deliver. Students who have competed in our athletic program are a great find for any employer. Our students can just flat out lead, and they have a respect for others' opinions and contributions that is vintage Wesleyan."

- Patricia Klecha-Porter, Adjunct Associate Professor of Physical Education (Coaches women's field hockey team and women's squash team.)
