I vividly remember a conversation with my freshman advisor in the fall of 1949. When I told him what I wanted to accomplish at Wesleyan, he said, "If four years from now we haven't helped you to expand and caused you to revalue your interests, then we will have failed you."
Wesleyan teaches you to be yourself, but it changes the self that you are. Sooner, rather than later, you meet a professor or a classmate who gets you excited about an idea, and the cobwebs are swept away. That was true for me 45 years ago, and it is true for Wesleyan students today.
The Wesleyan that we treasure-the Wesleyan that consists of a multitude of daily exchanges between bright, caring people-will not be fundamentally different as a result of this campaign. It will be fundamentally better.
I hope you have discovered in this prospectus that there are many opportunities for investment at Wesleyan where you could make your mark: from scholarships to professorships, from classroom renovations to writing fellows. And let me encourage you, as you are considering where to enter this campaign, to begin your commitment with strong, consistent giving to the Wesleyan Annual Fund. Wesleyan will spend your gifts effectively, using them with pride to expand the interests and talents of a new generation of Wesleyan students.
We look forward to your support. Thank you!
