Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholars Program - $25 million
A significant component of support for students is the Wesleyan Freeman
Asian Scholars Program. This international program, which was launched
in 1995 with support from the Freeman Foundation (led by Houghton
Freeman '43, his wife Doreen, and their son Graeme Freeman '77),
provides scholarship support for 20 students in each class from 10 Asian
countries. These include China, Hong Kong (which is still treated as a
separate recruiting region), Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. There are
currently 80 Freeman Scholars in the program, and the Freeman Foundation
has agreed to fund the full cost of this effort-$25 million-during the
campaign period.
