Wesleyan Annual Fund

Scholarships - $60 million

Wesleyan is proud of maintaining its commitment to an admission policy that accepts the best students regardless of their ability to cover the cost of their education. In recent years, however, Wesleyan has only been able to maintain this commitment by relying on an increasing percentage of student loans to make up its financial aid packages. This has placed a heavy burden on our students, some of whom have graduated with nearly twice the debt levels of students who attend peer schools.

Accordingly, in 1999 Wesleyan's trustees endorsed a 30 percent rollback in student loan expectations beginning with the class of 2004. In order to compensate for the loan reduction, we have increased the average scholarship grant we provide to students. This will cost an additional $3.25 million in scholarships each year. We seek to raise these funds from the income offered by new endowment and from current gifts given through the Wesleyan Annual Fund.

  • Endowment Gifts
    - An endowment gift of $500,000 can name a University Scholarship. Offered to select students with financial need to encourage the best candidates to choose Wesleyan, a University Scholarship provides more scholarship grant funds than a standard financial aid package, reducing loans by 35%, and includes a stipend for summer research with faculty.
    - An endowment gift of $300,000 can name a Wesleyan Scholarship. Providing scholarship grant funds within a standard financial aid package, a Wesleyan Scholarship covers one student's full need.

    - A gift of $100,000 can name an endowment fund that supports financial aid in perpetuity.

  • Annual Gifts for Scholarships given through the Wesleyan Annual Fund
    - A University Scholarship can be funded with a commitment of $25,000 a year for 4 years. Offered to select students with financial need to encourage the best candidates to choose Wesleyan, a University Scholarship provides more scholarship grant funds than a standard financial aid package, reducing loans by 35%, and includes a stipend for summer research with faculty.

    - A Wesleyan Scholarship can be funded with a commitment of $15,000 a year for 4 years. Providing scholarship grant funds within standard financial aid package, a Wesleyan Scholarship covers one student's full need.

    - Any or all of your yearly Wesleyan Annual Fund contribution can be directed to support the financial aid program.
