Civil Society in Comparative Perspective

Assistant Professor of Government Mary Alice Haddad incorporated a module in GOVT/EAST382 Civil Society in Comparative Perspective. The seminar examined civil society’s role in mediating the dynamic interaction between the society and the state. Haddad’s module performed an investigation of what a “global civil society” concerned with global climate change might look like and worked with Visiting Instructor and CCR fellow Eiko Otake to create a module that explored this topic through movement. 

"Students explored the meaning of Civil Society.  Through group movement study they noticed that being careless to other people’s needs and to the environment we share with others is uncivil.  Students and faculty became aware of their bodies as individual units, as interactive units, and as beings connected with the planet."
