IT’S “FAMILY FEBRUARY” AT WESLEYAN’S
CENTER FOR THE ARTS, FEATURING FREE ACTIVITIES FEBRUARY 5, 20,
AND 26
Middletown, CT, January 27, 2005—Wesleyan University’s
Center for the Arts has announced an exciting new schedule of
World Arts Family Series workshops on weekends throughout the
month of February. These hour-long workshops introduce children
(ages 5 and up) to a world of new arts and ideas in an informal,
hands-on setting. Families are invited to dance and make music
in the West African tradition, commemorate the Asian folk New
Year with festive art, and celebrate the vibrant world of music
through a costumed carnival with the Wesleyan University Orchestra
and guests. All events are free of charge and open to the public.
For more information call 860-685-3355 or visit www.wesleyan.edu/cfa.
The World Arts Family Series opens at 2:00pm on Saturday,
February 5 in Wesleyan’s World Music Hall with an introduction
to the rhythm and movement of Guinean and Nigerian music and
dance. Led by master teachers Cheree Camara and Lansana Toure,
families will learn and then perform West African dance to the
accompaniment of live drummers.
A celebration of family and the year of the rooster will commence
on Sunday, February 20 at 2pm at the Mansfield Freeman Center
for East Asian Studies. Center Curator Patrick Dowdey and Wesleyan
student curators will introduce families to the Lunar New Year
through interactive activities designed for children 6-14 years
old. Families will also be able to explore the gallery exhibit
featuring colorful folk art prints with explanations of the
characters, their meaning, and their relevance to the New Year.
Refreshments will be served.
On Saturday, February 26 at 2pm, the bright and merry aura
of carnival comes to Crowell Concert Hall in a celebration of
music with the Wesleyan University Orchestra conducted by Angel
Gil-Ordóñez. Children are encouraged to dress
in costume and enjoy pre-concert refreshments and mask-making
activities starting at 1:30pm in preparation for the carnival,
which will also feature performing guests from the newly-opened
Green Street Arts Center (860-685-7871 or www.greenstreetartscenter.org).
