Seminars
Among the department activities are weekly colloquia at which faculty members
from other universities speak as well as researchers form industrial
laboratories and research institutes. This program brings about 25 people each
year to the department. Speakers are suggested by students and faculty, and a
schedule is posted at the start of each semester. Students are given time to
meet with each speaker, and a student is assigned as host. There is also a
series of four different seminars covering the fields of organic, physical,
inorganic, and biological chemistry. At these seminars, generally held in the
evening, a faculty member or a student presents a lecture covering his or her
research or a recent publication of wide interest. Undergraduates also have the
opportunity to give both poster and oral presentations of their research at the
end of each summer by participating his in the
Hughes Research
Summer Program.
Seminars are a vital part of the intellectual life of the chemistry department. Weekly departmental seminars on Friday afternoons (CHEM521/522) are followed by refreshments and discussions in the chemistry lounge. Important scientists from other universities and research laboratories are the speakers. Programs for each semester are available form the chemistry office
or you can visit our web site.
