Beckman Eligibility & Admission

Applications are due Friday, April 7. Submit the online application form.

Students selected as Beckman Scholars must be academically outstanding and have experience or demonstrated interest in research.  A selection committee scores applications and conducts an interviews to evaluate the depth of scientific knowledge, leadership skills and future career interests. We anticipate selecting one to three Beckman Scholars each year.

Students applying must:

  • be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • be in their sophomore or junior year
  • have earned and maintain at least a 3.5/4.0 GPA (Wesleyan equivalent 90.0/100)
  • carry out research in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or biophysics with an approved Beckman mentor
  • major in Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, or Physics
  • be willing to commit to the entire Beckman Scholars program, including working full time for 10 weeks for two summers, and 10 hours per week during the academic year
  • participate in the annual Beckman Scholars Symposium at the Beckman Foundation

The  application package must include:

  • a resume indicating previous research experience and interests
  • a personal statement describing career goals and expectations regarding the program
  • a research project proposal describing the project rationale, hypothesis, research methodology, and anticipated outcomes
  • three letters of recommendation (including one from the proposed faculty mentor)
  • the student's academic transcript
  • an interview with the selection committee for the the most competitive applicants

Admissions are managed by the College of Integrative Sciences Director, who oversees an admissions committee of four Beckman mentors.
