Department

Policies
and Practices on Departmental Honors
This information supplements and
does not supersede the Academic Regulations for the Honors program established by the Honors College.
To receive departmental Honors, a Classics or Classical Civilization major must write a senior thesis, or produce a dramatic performance or exhibit, or, in exceptional cases, a senior essay of unusually high merit. For High Honors, a thesis, dramatic performance, or exhibit is required. To be eligible to write a thesis, students must have a grade point average of 85 overall, and 88 in the major.
Double majors may receive Honors
in either or both majors. To receive Honors in two majors, or from a
major and a program, a student must write either (a) a thesis that can be
evaluated by a full committee for each department or program (with the
understanding that the two departments or programs might come to different
decisions), or (b) two theses.
A student whose thesis advisor is a member of the Classical Studies
department, but whose thesis is written for Honors in another department, will
be subject to that department's rules and practices for grading, etc., which
may differ from those set out in this document.
