Opportunities for Study Abroad
Majors in both Classics
and Classical
Civilization are encouraged to spend a semester abroad, usually in the junior year. Students attending study abroad programs approved by the Office of International Study may apply up to four courses toward completion of their major in Classics or Classical Civilization. The courses must be on subjects relevant to the Classical world and require departmental pre-approval. Majors are expected to take at least one course in the department upon their return to campus.
The
Intercollegiate Center for
Classical Studies in Rome provides regular college credit and the
opportunity to study firsthand the monuments and culture of ancient and modern
Italy. Applications for the following terms are generally due in mid-October or
mid-March.
The
College Year in Athens offers either a full year or one semester of study in
ancient through modern Greek language, art, and archeology. Applications are on
a rolling admissions basis.
The following programs are also offered for study and excavation during the summer.
The Department of Classical Studies and the Archaeological Studies Program currently offer opportunities for summer fieldwork at Soissons (France), and in Illinois. For information on other fieldwork opportunities contact the Department of Classical Studies or the Archaeology Program. Furthermore, the Department of Classical Studies has sent students to intensive language programs over the summer in both Greek and Latin. We've also helped create a website listing (http://www.summer-classics.com) for all summer courses in Classics, including Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilization courses. Some funding is available for summer study (See http://www.wesleyan.edu/classics/squireflyer.html.)
