GENERAL EDUCATION EXPECTATIONS
as they relate to the COL curriculum

(HA) designate Humanities and Arts
(SBS) designated Social and Behavioral Sciences
(NSM) designated Natural Science and Mathematics
  1. The university expectation is that all students will so distribute their course work
during their first two years as to have earned by the end of their fourth semester at least
two credits in each of the three areas listed above, and all six of these courses are to be from different departments. But
    1. Because COL students normally are required to study abroad in the spring of their sophomore year, they are allowed until the end of the first semester of their junior year, if necessary, to complete these Stage I expectations: and
    2. Since the COL is an interdisciplinary major in Literature, History, and Philosophy, it is possible for at least three of these six course expectations to be satisfied by COL courses. WES MAPS will tell you to which of the three areas a particular COL course is assigned.

Students are also expected to take one additional course in each of the three areas (from any appropriate department) before graduation, making a total of nine general education courses. Advanced placement credits are not counted towards the satisfaction of this requirement. Your faculty advisor will help you to plan to meet these expectations.

  2. As is the case for other Wesleyan students, COL students are expected to complete the Stage I and II General Education Expectations before graduation. Any student unable or unwilling to do so is required to submit a written explanation to the Office of the Divisional Deans. It is also possible to petition for the privilege of not satisfying the expectations, although such petitions appear to be invariably denied. The student’s faculty advisor is expected to endorse such an explanation or petition. Normally a student who does not meet the expectations will become ineligible for Honors in General Scholarship, University Honors, or election to Phi Beta Kappa.
