The "Ideal" Greek Novel: A Synthesis of Myth and Fiction
GRK 258 FA
This course examines the nature of fiction in the so-called ideal Greek novel. The emphasis of the course will be on Longus, but Achilles Tatius, Chariton, Xenophon of Ephesus, and Heliodorus will also be considered. The
rising sophistication in literary allusion, readership issues and the internal structure of the novel will be examined. Students will gain familiarity with the language of the novel (vocabulary and syntax) in addition to
an understanding of the larger literary aspects of the genre.
