This course explores the emergence of the three Celtic "nations" of the British Isles: Scots, Welsh, and Irish, and the history of their sometimes troubled relationship with their larger and more powerful neighbor, England. Emphasis will be put on the role of religion and history in shaping national identities and nationalisms in the modern period. It will also consider the effects of trans-national bodies on identities in the 21st century.
