Improvisation Techniques in South Indian Music

This course may be repeated for credit.
This course will introduce advanced students of Karnatak vocal music to raga alapana and svara kalpana, the most important forms of melodic improvisation. Students will begin by learning pre-composed examples of these
As they become comfortable with idiom, they will progress to designing their own improvisations.

Weekly listening and transcription assignments.
