Mission Statement
Coro’s mission is to strengthen
communities and the democratic process by preparing individuals for
effective and ethical leadership in the public affairs arena.
Job Description
Coro Fellows develop an understanding of
leadership and decision-making by working on challenging issues with the
powerful individuals and institutions that influence our communities.
Through the Fellow Program in Public Affairs, Coro not only invites out next
generation of leaders to see more-- but ultimately, to do more - in our
schools, our communities, our workplaces, and in our democracy. For
nine months, Coro Fellows spend up to fifty hours a week in a unique series
of internships: government, business, non-profit, labor, media, and a
political campaign. During these internships, different topics are examined;
public safety and justice, entertainment and media, health and the
environment, education and information technology, economic development and
public finance. During the program, Fellows have an opportunity to interview
community leaders, work on individual public service projects, and attend
weekly seminars to receive practical training in communication, negotiation,
mediation, facilitation and critical thinking skills. Fellows also spend a
week in Albany to learn firsthand about the workings of the state
government. The goal of the Program is to provide Fellows with a
well-rounded perspective on how the different sectors of society work
together and influence each other.
Training
The Fellows program provides nine months of
intensive graduate-level training in shaping public policy through
consulting projects and close interaction with practitioners and leaders in
the public affairs community. Fellows explore public affairs topics in-depth
during seminars, interviews, and special focus weeks.
Qualifications/Skills Required
Coro seeks bright,
self-motivated individuals committed to ethical, effective leadership and
strengthening democracy through citizen involvement. Evidence of leadership
experience or leadership potential and concern for the well being of
communities are criteria for selection. A Bachelor’s degree is desirable and
post-graduate academic study or professional work experience may be helpful.
Fellows come from all academic disciplines, careers, and ethnic and
socio-economic backgrounds, and may be right out of school or mid-career
professionals.
Cost
Tuition is $3500. Deference, stipends and scholarships based upon
demonstrated need are available to help cover living expenses. Undergraduate
or graduate school loan payment deferments while in the Fellows Program are
granted by lending institutions on an individual basis. Coro Fellows may
also receive graduate credit at Columbia University’s School of
International and Public Affairs, the Milano School of the New School for
Social Research, and the Heinz School at Carnegie Mellon University, among
others.
Each Coro Center administers its own tuition and
financial assistance policies. Further information is available at
www.coro.org or contact individual centers to discuss your personal
