Prize

Library.
Often, graduating seniors with need-based loans coming
due are faced with choosing between careers in the non-profit or education
sectors for which they hold a passion, but are by nature lower paying, or
for higher paying positions in the private sector that offer greater
financial gain. Established in 2001 by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miller, P’99 &
‘02, the Miller Family Foundation Prize recognizes the importance of
supporting individuals who are interested in pursuing careers that benefit
the community through education or through service and advocacy by providing
two $5,000 loan forgiveness grants. Recipients will be notified prior to
commencement and a payment will be made directly to the loan grantor.
Criteria for selection (students must meet the
following criteria):

Be a
graduating senior with need-based loans;
-
Have
a confirmed job acceptance for a full-time, one or more year position
with a non-profit or educational organization;

Provide evidence of interest in a social activism, education or
community service career; and
-
Have
a first-year salary of $30,000 or less.
Selection process
(students must submit an application to the CRC consisting of an original
and four copies of the following):

A letter of confirmation from the agency or organization certifying
acceptance of a full time job offer lasting one or more years (include
salary amount and/or compensation offer);

A
resume detailing your social activism, public service, volunteer and
work experiences; and
-
A
written statement (2 pages maximum) describing your interest and
commitment to working in the education or non-profit sector.
Additionally, please submit one copy of the
following:

A
letter of recommendation from a faculty member or supervisor; and
-
Confirmation of need-based loans from the Wesleyan University Financial
Aid Office.
Selection committee:
-
Director of the Career Resource Center or their designee (provides
administrative oversight);
-
Director of the Office of Community Service or their designee;
-
Director of Financial Aid or their designee; and
-
One
faculty member or Class Dean.
Due Date:
Hard-copy (paper) applications must be received at the CRC by Friday,
May 23, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. Only complete applications will be considered.
