Teaching Abroad

  • Best Bets for Teaching Abroad - Tons of links, to other comprehensive teaching abroad Web sites, and to exchange and placement programs.
  • CIEE - Information on work permits for France, Ireland, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Costa Rica and Australia, as well as a "Teach in China" program.
  • Cultural Embrace - Pre-arranges and guarantees placements for individuals and groups to work, intern, volunteer, teach, take cultural classes and travel abroad.
  • Dave's ESL Cafe - Meeting place for ESL/EFL students and teachers.
  • The Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) - A worldwide school system, operated by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in 14 foreign countries in Europe and the Pacific.
  • DOS, US Department of State, Office of Overseas Schools - Lists 180 American sponsored schools located in 113 countries. These schools are assisted by the US Department of State but are independent and non-governmental. Usually requires certification and some experience.

  • ESL Employment - Search ESL positions by region.

  • The International Educator - Includes a list of job fairs for teaching K-12 abroad; a list of schools abroad seeking teachers; a resume bank; and a ton of articles on finding teaching positions abroad.
  • International Schools Services - Provides recruiting, supplying, consulting, and other services to the overseas educational community.
  • JET Program - The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme seeks to help enhance internationalization in Japan, by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations. The programme aims to enhance foreign language education in Japan, and to promote international exchange at the local level through fostering ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth.
  • JobsAbroad.com - Directory for employment opportunities around the world.
  • Little Dragons English Program - They offer one year contracts, 5000 rmb ($625USD) per month, housing, health insurance, airfare reimbursement upon completion of contract. Teachers have 16-20 classroom hours a week teaching 30 minute classes to 3-4-5 year olds.
  • Mark's ESL - Teach English throughout the world.

  • Reach to Teach - Offers free ESL teacher placement services.
  • Search Associates - One of the largest international school placement organizations.
  • Transitions Abroad - Bimonthly magazine with listings of agencies, career articles and opportunities for teaching English as a second language. Check the September/October issue for web sites that list teaching abroad opportunities of all types.

Higher Education

  • Academic Careers Online - Faculty, research, post doc, adjunct, administrative, and senior management positions at (community) colleges, universities, and research institutes around the world.
  • Advice columns - from the Chronicle of Higher Education.
  • Chronicle of Higher Education - The premier journal for higher education job listings as well as informative articles about higher education. Wes students and alumni should e-mail crc@wesleyan.edu for the online password.
  • The CV Doctor - The Career Talk columnists critique 5 C.V.'s submitted by readers.
  • From C.V. to resume - Chronicle of Higher Education shows an aspiring science writer how to transform her C.V. into a résumé.
  • Jobs in Higher Education - An EXCELLENT site, provides links to over 400 colleges' and universities' job listings, as well as links to various online sources of jobs in higher education.
  • New England Higher Education Recruitment Consortium - Free to job seekers and not restricted to people who work in academia. Jobs listed range from positions for professors and lecturers to openings for physicians, scientists, laboratory technicians, researchers, and medical and support staff.
  • Scholarly Societies Project - Links to hundreds of scholarly and academic organizations with sites on the Web. Some of these sites list jobs, conferences, and networking opportunities.
  • Smart Careers - Profiles of people who have found interesting careers in and out of the academy.
  • The Times Higher Education Supplement - UK & Europe - UK, European, and overseas tertiary and higher education jobs, and updated weekly news.
  • Tenure and labor relations in academe - from the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Private and Independent Schools

  • Academic Employment Network - This Web site offers free access to a database of jobs in education (secondary-school listings are mixed in with higher education and public-school listings). For a fee, job searchers can post résumés or get access to a more comprehensive job-search database.
  • American Montessori Schools - An incomplete listing of Montessori schools (may only include accredited schools).
  • Boarding Schools Online - Two excellent databases at this site, one of private schools in general, and another of boarding schools (more extensive profiles). Easier to use than Peterson's, especially if you're looking for schools in a particular state.
  • The Education Group - Since 1988, this organization has specialized in consulting and job placement for charter and independent (private) schools. They perform nationwide searches for educational and administrative positions at schools across the nation.
  • Educational Directions - View teacher job listings for free. You can also subscribe to view upper-level administrative and development positions in independent schools across the nation, which are also available in paper format by U.S. mail.
  • Edulink - This Web site features an "Online Recruiting Fair" where job-seekers and schools can browse listings or, for a fee, list themselves. All positions are abroad.
  • Independent School Management - Lists administrative and teaching positions in independent schools in the US.
  • International Boys' Schools Coalition and National Coalition of Girls' Schools - These Web sites feature directories of member schools, with links to some school home pages.
  • National Association of Independent Schools - Over 1200 schools, searchable by such criteria as grade level, coeducational or single-sex, and boarding or day. Also visit their "Career Center" to search job openings and post your resume.
  • National Council of Teachers of English - Besides information and resources for teachers of English at all levels, this Web site has job postings and a section where job-seekers can post information about themselves, both free.
  • Peterson's Private School Directory - Some of the school profiles are much more extensive than those in Boarding Schools Online (above). Also includes a listing of Special Needs schools.
  • Private School Employment Network - Teaching and administrative jobs in private schools. No indication of when these job listings were posted.

  • MATCH Corps - MATCH Corps is a new program in which recent college graduates from excellent schools across the country commit one year to do public service in exchange for a modest living stipend and housing on the third floor of the MATCH School. Corps members work with four students, tutoring them each for two hours daily.
  • Teach for America
  • The New Teacher Project - The New Teacher Project works with a variety of education-related agencies and organizations at the local, state, and national levels to help them recruit, prepare and hire new teachers effectively.

Educators of Color

Public Schools

  • CalTeach Online - An excellent way to view and apply to job openings in California. You can enter a resume on their system and automatically apply to openings. Also includes a page with links to a number of other teaching job sites on the Web.
  • Council for Exceptional Children - CEC Career Connections - The only job bank on the Internet devoted exclusively to special education professionals. CEC provides three ways for employers and jobseekers to connect: a job bank; a resume database; and a consultant, trainer and expert witness directory.
  • International WWW School Registry - Research the school or the school district BEFORE you apply for a job, or prior to an interview.
  • Job Bank Portal - National Teacher Recruitment Clearinghouse - An excellent way to find both state-by-state and national teacher job databases on the Web.
  • JobsForTeachers.com - Links to teacher placement agencies, some of which place teachers in the public schools. Some of these agencies may charge a fee when they place you.
  • National database of school district addresses - Searchable database of U.S. school districts, providing addresses and phone numbers, and number of schools, teachers and students for each district.
  • National Educators Employment Network - This innovative electronic employment service is designed to match the professional staffing needs of schools with teacher applicants who can fill those positions. This nation-wide, online database provides an efficient and economical way to overcome the geographical limitations of recruitment and reach the most desirable teaching candidates.
  • Midwest Education Jobs Page - Generates a long list of current education openings, some of which are in K - 12 schools.
  • New England Association for Employment in Education - Includes events listings and job links.
  • Project Connect - Teaching and administrative job openings, mainly in the Midwest, West and South.
  • Somerville, MA Public Schools Job Listings
  • State Departments of Education - Links to all 50 states' Department of Education Web sites. Most of these contain information about certification, and some go way beyond, with school district and charter school profiles, teaching resources, and information about special programs and special needs schools.
  • Teachers-Teachers.com - You enter your resume on their Web site, and schools search for teacher candidates. In June, 2000, there were over 3000 candidates and 1200 schools registered.
  • USTeach - A recently introduced teacher job site created by a non-profit consortium of states. As of 7/99, job listings were available for some school districts in California, Washington and Delaware.
