If you are reading this sentence, you must have at least some interest in or
curiosity about attending law school and/or pursuing a career in law.
You are to be applauded both for that interest and for taking a first step –
reading this guidebook – in learning more.Law school is one of
the most challenging, and potentially rewarding, academic paths open to
Wesleyan graduates. It also represents a significant commitment in time and
money, one into which no student should lightly enter.
Undoubtedly, you
have countless questions about the admissions process, the academic
environment, and the expenses of law school. Hopefully, you are also
beginning to form questions about how law school might fit into your overall
career / life path, whether a law degree actually will be a useful tool
along that path, what you might like to accomplish through a legal career,
and what your daily life will be like trying.
As you consider your
next steps in assessing whether law school is the right choice for you, know
that there are a number of services and resources available through the
Career Resource Center. Jim Kubat, Wesleyan's Pre-Law Advisor, coordinates
these services and you are encouraged to take advantage of as many of them
as possible. Services include:
-
Individual and group counseling/advising ;
-
Assistance with the law school application process (including the
Credential Service);
-
Assistance with understanding the admissions process;
-
CRC-sponsored panels and discussions;
-
Career
Outlook opportunities within the legal community; and
-
Self-directed outreach to Wesleyan alumni facilitated by the CRC.
This guide has a
twofold mission. First, and most importantly, it is intended to assist you
in deciding whether pursuing law as a profession is the right choice for
you. Second, it is intended to assist you in gaining admittance into the
law school that is right for you through realistic self-assessment and
evaluation of the schools in which you might be interested.

The CRC expresses its gratitude to Matthew L. Tuccillo, Class of 1995, for
his continuous work on this guidebook and his ongoing interest in Wesleyan's
pre-law program. After serving as a CRC career advisor as an undergraduate,
Mr. Tuccillo co-authored (with CRC staff) the original version of this
guidebook in 1996; he has since worked on updates in 2000, 2002, and 2005.
He has also designed and/or served on several CRC-sponsored pre-law panels,
recently including the "Law Career Panel" in 2001 and the "Careers for the
Common Good Alumni Panel" in 2004.
Mr. Tuccillo earned his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in
1999. His lengthy legal resume includes employment at several leading law
firms, as well as prior internships at governmental agencies, public
interest entities, and courts. He currently practices in Boston, where he
specializes in plaintiff-side class action litigation. |
