Events & Workshops
The CRC offers a variety of programs held throughout
the year to provide you with the tools you need to move forward with your
career planning, job or internship search, or graduate school plans. Scroll
through the list below to explore the programs that fit your needs.
For a detailed schedule of these programs, check the
MyCRC calendar.
Workshops
Resume and Cover Letter:
If you have never written a resume, this workshop is for you! The major
components of a resume will be discussed, and it is possible that you could
come out of the workshop with a rough draft to bring to the CRC for editing
help. If you already have a rough draft of a resume, the workshop can be
useful in helping you to add new experiences and make your resume into a
more powerful document.
Interviewing:
Interviewing well for a job is a skill that can be learned. This workshop
will cover all the points that you need to know - such as preparation,
attire, the greeting, providing examples from your past experience,
structuring your answers, and questions you can ask the interviewer - in
order to present yourself as the best possible candidate for a full-time job
or internship.
Networking: Networking is an essential skill
that can help you throughout your career. It is
an excellent way of finding a job or internship, and is nothing more than
talking to people to help you gain advice, knowledge, and tips that pertain
to a particular field, industry, occupation, or graduate school. Networking
enables you to gather valuable information in a low-stress situation by
making contacts and establishing relationships.
Choosing a Major:
This workshop explores some of the considerations and typical
concerns involved when selecting a major, and presents an approach for
narrowing down your options and making that final decision. Examples of
alumni, their majors, and the fields/industries they entered after
graduation are provided to highlight the outstanding versatility of the
Wesleyan liberal arts education.
Internship Workshop:
Wesleyan students land excellent internships. This important
workshop covers the definition and value of internships, the search process,
useful resources, and ways the CRC can help.
Events
Alumni Networking Opportunities:
The CRC offers many ways for alumni and parents to connect with and
mentor Wesleyan students and young alumni regarding issues of career
planning and career success. By providing "real world" advice and
opportunities for today's Wesleyan students, Wes alumni and parents can
support the leaders of tomorrow. There are several specific on-campus
networking opportunities that the CRC hosts annually, including a reception
during Fall Homecoming/Family weekend and again at Reunion/Commencement.
Employer Information
Sessions: Information
sessions are a more informal way for employers to share information about
their company culture, goals and career paths. In many cases, it allows
current students to interact with recent hires (often Wes -alums) to learn
more about life after Wesleyan.
CRC Career Forum: Our October 6th
Career Fair in Beckham Hall will
allow you to meet employers from a variety of fields and industries in order
to explore careers, discuss job and internship opportunities, and to
practice those all-important networking skills. Polish that resume and
bring copies!
Senior Survival Week:
This program will help you prepare for your first year out of college and on
the job. You will learn to live within a budget, survive your first
paycheck, buy a car and purchase auto insurance, and develop other life
skills that will help you along the way!
Pre-Law:
Several events are held each year to support students who self-identify as
“pre-law”. Presentations by law school representatives cover topics such as
the application process, personal statements, and the admissions decision.
Wes alumni serve on panels to discuss their careers in law. An annual trip
is arranged to the US Court in Brooklyn with the support of Judge Steven
Gold ’77 which gives students a view into the proceedings of a US courtroom,
as well as a networking lunch with other alumni. Mock LSAT exams are held
twice each semester. Finally, every other year, the CRC sponsors the
Wesleyan Law School Fair in Beckham Hall.
Health Professions:
Health care is a vast field. Allopathic and
osteopathic medical schools, dentistry, veterinary medicine, hospital
administration, physical therapy, and optometry are among the better-known
choices, but there are many other opportunities. Some of the print resources
in the CRC library can help you become more familiar with other career
options. You are almost certain to find Wesleyan graduates who have chosen
these other paths and found them better suited to their talents, interests
and lifestyles.
As part of the health professions program,
there will be a number of “brown bag” lunches with an outside speaker
covering a variety of topics. For those considering medical, dental and
veterinary school, there will be an Essential Meeting covering all the
complexities of Wesleyan’s process. It is best to see the Health
Professions Counselor or other CRC counselors early in your time at Wesleyan
so that you have taken or have a plan for taking all the required courses.
Management and Leadership Conference, October 24 – October 28, 2008 -An
intense five-day experience for students who want to know what it takes to
be an effective leader. The MLC is designed for Wesleyan University
students who aspire to top management and leadership
positions after graduation. If you are future oriented, ready to roll up
your sleeves, and want to build a path to career success, join us in
October.
