DATE: July, 2006

TO: All CSS'ers

FROM: Peter Rutland, Chair

As the last month of the summer vacation begins, it is time to learn about what you can expect in your first week at the College of Social Studies in September.

We look forward to meeting you at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 4, as detailed in the CSS Orientation Day Schedule.   That meeting takes place in the CSS Common Room on the fourth floor of the PAC.(For a complete overview of the academic year please see the CSS Calendar.)

House Fund Dues are $40.00 a semester. This will be charged to your student account. (A lunch fee of $60.00 will also be charged to your student account for CSS Monday Lunches. You are expected to attend all the Monday Lunches.) These fees are essential to the support of the social events that make life in the College so much richer for us all --from Friday afternoons, to evening affairs such as the Christmas/Chanukah party, to the spring picnic.

Enjoy what is left of the summer. We are looking forward to seeing most of you in the fall. Good luck to the Juniors who will be away next semester.

SOPHOMORES:

Your first tutorial paper is due Friday, September 9th. In order to give you more time, you can find your assignment here for that week so you can get started with some of the readings beforehand. (If you are unsure which tutorial you are in, you can check the tutorial list.) We also include the syllabus and first assignment of the colloquium, the first meeting of which is Monday, September 12th. Your first essay for the colloquium is due on that day, Monday, September 12th.

The "Notes for Registration" show how the CSS would like you to think about course selection. Briefly, expect to register for the colloquium (CSS 271) and for your first tutorial only. For example, if your tutorial in the first trimester is Economics, register for CSS 414. You will also register for one other course. If you have completed Econ 110 or Econ 101 and one other Econ course and received an average of C+ or better, you are all set. An AP or IB in Economics with a 4 or 5 will also work. If you have taken no Economics and do not have calculus, enroll in Econ 101 first semester and a second Econ course in the second semester. If you do have calculus, but no Economics, Econ 110 alone fulfills the requirement. Mr. Kilby will be glad to answer any questions you may have on this topic by E-mail.

JUNIORS:

If you are planning on being away for the fall semester please let us know where you will be. You may e-mail Madeleine at mhowenstine@wesleyan.edu or call (860) 685-2240. This will help us keep our files current.  Those of you who will be here this semester should consult the "Notes for Registration" for the junior year.

SENIORS:

Please read "Notes for Registration" and the attached schedule for thesis and project work carefully. It is your responsibility to meet these deadlines.
