TO: All CSS'ers

FROM: Cecilia Miller and Peter Rutland, CSS Co-Chairs

As the last month of the summer vacation begins, it is time to learn about what you can expect in your first week at the College of Social Studies in September.

We look forward to meeting you at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 7, as detailed in the CSS Orientation Day Schedule. That meeting takes place in the CSS Common Room on the fourth floor of the PAC. (For a complete overview of the academic year please see the CSS Calendar.)

House Fund Dues are $40.00 a semester. This will be charged to your student account.  In addition, a lunch fee of $60.00 will also be charged to your student account for CSS Monday Lunches. You are expected to attend all the Monday Lunches.) These fees are essential to the support of the social events that make life in the College so much richer for us all--from Friday afternoons, to evening affairs such as the Christmas/Chanukah party, to the spring picnic.

Being part of the CSS community involves responsibilities as well as rights.  Here are some examples:  Be aware of each other as you study in the CSS, at Olin, and elsewhere.  Security on campus is increasingly a concern, especially late at night.  Volunteer to help set up Woodhead Lounge for the Monday Lunch, and then to carry food back to the CSS after the lunch.  Clean up after yourself, and others, when you leave the CSS Library and the CSS Lounge.  Do not leave valuables unattended anywhere on the fourth floor or in your CSS boxes.  This encourages trouble.  Help the CSS Administrative Assistant, Mickie Dame, the Tutors,s and the Co-Chairs whenever you can.  Recognize that everyone in the CSS is working very hard.  Be respectful of the other members of the College at all times!

Enjoy what is left of the summer. We are looking forward to seeing most of you in the fall. Good luck to the Juniors who will be away next semester.

SOPHOMORES:

Your first tutorial paper is due Friday, September 11th. In order to give you more time, you can find your assignment here for that week so you can get started with some of the readings beforehand. (If you are unsure which tutorial you are in, you can check the "tutorial list". We also include the syllabus and first assignment of the colloquium, the first meeting of which is Monday, September 14th. Your first essay for the colloquium is due on that day, Monday, September 14th.

The "Notes for Registration" show how the CSS would like you to think about course selection. Briefly, expect to register for the colloquium (CSS 271) and for your first tutorial only. For example, if your tutorial in the first trimester is Economics, register for CSS 220. You will also register for one other course. If you have completed Econ 110 or Econ 101 and one other Econ course and received an average of C+ or better, you are all set. An AP or IB in Economics with a 4 or 5 will also work. If you have taken no Economics and do not have calculus, enroll in Econ 101 first semester and a second Econ course in the second semester. If you do have calculus, but no Economics, Econ 110 alone fulfills the requirement. We  will be glad to answer any questions you may have on this topic by E-mail.

JUNIORS:

If you are planning on being away for the fall semester please let us know where you will be. You may call (860) 685-2240. This will help us keep our files current.  Those of you who will be here this semester should consult the "Notes for Registration" for the junior year.

SENIORS:

Please read "Notes for Registration" and the attached schedule for thesis and project work carefully. It is your responsibility to meet these deadlines.
