The New Haven Mineral Club presents their 34th annual show Minerals, Gems, Jewelry, and Fossils, June 4 and 5 at the University of Bridgeport, Wheeler Recreation Center, 400 University Ave, Bridgeport, Ct. Sat 9:30-5, Sun 10-4:30. Free parking, entry donation $3.50, children under 12 free with adult admission. Free talks by guest speakers on both days.
The Bristol Gem and Mineral Club presents their 33rd Annual Gem and Mineral Show, Oct. 22 and 23 at Beals Community Center, 240 Stafford Ave., Bristol, Ct. Sat 10-5, Sun 10-4, adults $4, senior citizens $3, children under 12 free with adult admission. Activities and entertainment for the whole family.
Check out this course on Physical Oceanography called DataStreme Ocean, held in Danbury Ct and taught by James Backus. The class is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society, and each teacher who completes the course (12 weeks) gets 3 graduate credits from SUNY of Brockport. This is a graduate level class that meets face to face 3 times in the semester. During the other 9 weeks, the class does work on the AMS web site. Our local earth science organization for Connecticut educators is CESTA, the Connecticut Earth Science Teachers Association, which is affiliated with the Ct. Science Teachers Association. Click on the CSTA membership link for information on how to join.

Institute in Marine Science for Middle and High School Teachers: Project Oceanology, Groton
Study coastal and offshore environments along Long Island Sound to learn concepts and techniques related to oceanography, water pollution, and coastal zone management, using Project Oceanology's boats, oceanographic equipment, and waterfront laboratory. Select and adapt marine science curriculum materials to incorporate the study of the marine environment into your teaching. Several new resources for science have been added to the Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE) website at www.ed.gov/free. FREE makes it easy for teachers, parents, students, and others to find teaching and learning resources from more than 40 federal organizations.
* "For Kids Only: Earth Science Enterprise" helps students learn about aerosols, ozone, air pressure, tropical rainfall and hurricanes, plate tectonics, earth science careers, and more. (NASA; http://kids.earth.nasa.gov)
* "Bugscope" offers magnified images of specimens of beetles, spiders and other insects, and arthropods viewed through an electron microscope. (National Science Foundation; http://bugscope.beckman.uiuc.edu)
