19th-century American paintings in the DAC Collection include the Read oil shown above; an oil portrait of an unidentified man by Samuel L. Waldo (1783-1861); an anonymous, circa-1850s portrait of Baron Alexander von Humboldt; a View of the Connecticut River of 1865 executed in oil by Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908); and seven works done in oil by Elihu Vedder (1836-1923): Broken-Down Tree, Newport, 1864; Mugnone Torrent, 1858-60; Sunset, Perugia, ca. 1875; Field, Study, ca. 1870s; Olevana, near Rome, 1870s; Old Faggot Gatherers, 1870s; and Old Mill Wheel, Bordighera, ca. 1866.
