Jean-Léon Gérôme (French 1824-1904)

The Chess Players, c. 1870-73, oil on canvas (photo: Phil)

One of the several European paintings in the DAC Collection is The Chess Players by Jean-Léon Gérôme, known for his Orientalist representations of Egyptian scenes. Gérôme's imagery drew both on his observations during his travels in Egypt and on the era's dominant European notions of "The East."

Other French oil paintings include landscapes by Jules Dupré (1811-1889), Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876), and Jean-Charles Cazin (1841-1901), as well as Corner in the Artist's Studio by Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891). Other European paintings include Landscape with Woman Milking a Cow and a Shepherd, an oil on circular board by David Teniers the Younger (Flemish 1610-1640), and an anonymous English oil of Lime Kiln in the Woods, ca. 1800-10.
