Whistler & His Contemporaries

Weir

Julian Alden Weir (American, 1852-1919)

The Haystacks, late 19th/early 20th century, etching and drypoint

The DAC's 89 prints by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) include rarities and examples of altered states. Also in the collection is the set 42 Etchings from Cancelled Plates and a set of photographs of Whistler's prints commissioned by the artist. These (and 3 Whistler drawings) are largely the gift of George Davison who was a great admirer of Whistler and his followers among younger painter-etchers and lithographers.

The collection includes works by other U.S. artists associated with the American Etching Revival. Among these artists are Joseph Pennell (207 prints), John Twachtman (3), and Julian Alden Weir (16). Other U.S. printmakers of this era, many of whose work bridged the 19th and 20th centuries, include Otto H. Bacher (6); Timothy Cole (26); Frank Duveneck (2); Robert S. Gifford (7); Pop Hart (8); Childe Hassam (16); Charles F. Mielatz (86); Charles A. Platt (10); Ernest Roth (4); John Sloan (1); and Henry Wolf (56). Some later artists who worked in the Etching Revival tradition in the 20th century are listed on the DAC's pages about American prints from 1900-1950.
