Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778)

Carceri, 1760, etching (photo: Phil)

George Davison collected a group of 33 albums in which were inserted about 1,000 prints by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778). These constitute the nearly complete etchings of this master of Roman views and subjects of classical antiquity. Now in the museum's collection, this group (not fully catalogd at the item level) includes a set of Piranesi's most famous works, the Carceri or imaginary prisons. The print reproduced above was on view in a 1997 exhibition of the set.
